Does anyone know whether and under what circumstances a person visiting Chile may bring a firearm to that country? Can firearms be readily bought and sold there? If I take a firearm of mine there (assuming it's OK with Chile), would I have trouble bringing it back to the US?

Firearms can be bought by foreigners, so long as you have your R.U.T. (like ssn). You will be issued one through the employment process. Someone on a tourist visa cannot purchase weapon. You have to declare whether the firearm is fore home defense or sporting purposes. They are very strict about this. This declaration is made when you purchase your weapon at the gun shop. The paperwork then goes to the Carabineros (police) who know what the gun is used for. Serious infraction if the weapon is listed as home defense and you have it outside your home. Not sure about bringing back weapon. Perhaps LanChile would have good info. (Airline). Hope this helps. Great country that is the most stable in south america, best of luck.

Yes, I'm very impressed with Chile. We were down there in 2005 and liked what we saw. They have privatized their Social Security, and it seems to be working very well for them.
