I did a search here on THR and didnt find much. I need to know what are all the legalities behind trading firearms in IL? In particular trading an AR-15 to another member here on the Classifieds or EE for his/her firearm?

IANAL - If I recall correctly - same as sales...it's FOID to FOID with all personal info like on a DL. Data must be kept for 10 years by both parties. Keep in mind that there are towns in IL that still impose their version of the AW Ban. Finally, the 24 hr (long gun) or 72 hr (handgun) waiting period still applies with private sales.

How dumb is that? So, I have to hold on to my handgun for 72 hours before I can.....get..........your handgun. Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks Ill-annoy.
How dumb is it that I can shoot people with an M2 Browning .50 cal heavy machine gun in Afghanistan with the risk of getting myself killed at the age of 19 but when I get home I am told at the gun counter that I cant handle a a 9mm handgun. :barf:

This is NOT true. Private transfers are not subject to this rule. Foid to Foid, info kept for 10 yrs. Buyer is under obligation to comply with local regs in private sales.

Onward Allusion is accurate. Private transfers are subject to the same law. Private sales require a 24/72 hour waiting period just the same as from an FFL. The IL AG ruled on that several years ago and it's clearly worded in statute.
720 ILCS 5/24‑3

If I remember correctly Gov Blago signed a bill into law that says the waiting period time begins at the moment an "agreement" to purchase/trade is reached.

Read 720 ILCS 5/24‑3. That's the statute that covers transfers.
