I traveled from Newark, NJ to Tucson, AZ this past week for a few days of handgun training at Marksman Pistol Institute. Thanks to all your help, the trip was problem free.

TRAVEL FROM NEWARK: I brought a SIG 226 in an original locked case, along with 300 rounds in a separate locked case, both placed inside my luggage. I declared the weapons at the check in with Continental. A TSA rep came over and asked to X-ray the bag. They saw that my action had been cable tied, and immediately let me pass on to boarding. The Continental and TSA rep said they must see at least 50 to 100 people per day, traveling with weapons.

TRAINING AT MARKSMAN PISTOL: Jim Stover, the head of training, is fabulous. I have a Florida CCW permit, which is valid in Arizona, but needed to sharpen my skills. We covered drawing and shooting from the holster at varying distances, timed drills, low light drills, flashlight work, and covered every conceivable situation that could arise. If you have not taken professional training, I strongly suggest getting it now. After 30 years of shooting, I was shocked at how much I did not know. This man is truly amazing.

TRAVEL FROM TUCSON TO NEWARK: The process was a little different. After declaring my weapons at check in, the TSA took my bag downstairs. I was asked to wait to the side, while my bag cleared. They called up 10 minutes later, and I boarded with no problem. I picked up my luggage containing the weapon on the baggage carousel at Newark.

I was dreading flying with my weapon, but the tips I got from the subscribers to this forum were simply invaluable. For our Tucson readers, if i could pass the Bar in Arizona, I would move there tomorrow. - Steve

Glad to hear you had a good experience traveling to & training in "The Old Pueblo" - I've known Jim Stover professionally for about 10 years now, and he's very experienced and knowledgeable.

Slightly surprised that you couldn't find decent training opportunities closer to home, if not NJ then PA, VA or OH - unless you had other business out AZ way...

We don't normally encourage East Coasters to relocate here, but you seem right-minded enough, so start studying for the AZ bar...
