I'm looking to get a firing pin replaced on an old Bay State break action 16 ga. shotgun. I was just wondering what the price should be around to get it fixed by a local gunsmith. Thanks.

Call some local gunsmiths and ask!
Thats the only way you will get a true price range.

There is no way to answer your question.

Gunsmith prices vary all over the map due to location, reputation, demand, shop overhead, etc.

You might find some old gunsmith in a small town who would do it for $15 bucks, and you might find a large, nationally known shop in a metropolitan area who would want $150 bucks.

Just call or shop around your area of the country and get some estimates.

Regardless, making a firing pin for a break-open single shot is not much of a trick, so it shouldn't be terribly expensive.

Please be careful. I have encountered many of those old guns whose firing pins were broken or removed deliberately to keep them from being fired. Customers who had no idea what they had brought them in and wanted the pin(s) replaced so they could shoot them. In one case the old Damascus barrels were so bad I poked a common pin through the sides. The customer still wanted the gun repaired so he could go duck hunting with magnum shells. I simply refused. I lost a customer, but I didn't want his loss of a hand or an eye on my conscience.

Thanks Jim. I had heard of the old Damascus twists and made sure it wasn't one of those before I even thought of bringing it in. I inherited the shotgun from my grandfather, and I think he just took the pin out because of all the kids running around at the time.

Your gun is a Harrington and Richardson incase you wish to fix it yourself. I don't know the model tho.

Thanks Chaw, Yeah I've already matched up the serial numbers and everything on it. It's a pretty cool old gun. At this point I don't really trust my self doing it as I don't have any experience with it.
