Frankly, my RIA/Citadel Tacticals are as servicable as any other 1911 that I own. My Kimbers are finished much better and my Colt is sublime in fit, but I can shoot my RIA/Citadel 1911s as well as anything else and they have proven quite reliable. A Citadel Tactical is my weekly range beater, in fact, and it's seen many many many thousands of rounds through it without a single issue. In short - a Citadel Tactical, plus some proper Colt 7rd tapered-lip magazines and decent grips, is about all the 1911 that is needed.
If I had a jones to spend more, I'd likely consider either a Colt 1991A1 or a Kimber Custom II. I have owned examples of both, and both were very very nice pistols indeed.
Are Colt and Springfield 1911's fatter than others? In pictures it seems like the STI's and Kimbers are really slim... Is it just the pictures thats making it look like that?
my one and only is a used Springer Standard I found in the Cabelas gun library. I absolutely love it, hasnt given me any issues. Based on the reliability of their used hardware I wouldnt hesitate to get a new Springer of any flavor.
get something that already has the SIGHTS you want. they are the toughest thing to change when you decide to start tinkering. then measure the o.d. of your barrel, the i.d. of your slide and have a custom bushing made by EGW to tighten up the gun. then buy a case of 1000 rds. and shoot all of them before you go gunsmithing again. ammo is not cheap, but it is better in the long run than wishing you had bought a different gun. have fun.
