Im going to be purchasing my first 1911 first I want to know whats American made.. these days thats in the 600-750ish range Springfield GI is made in brazil.. PT1911 is also.. I want to support our boys here in the U.S.

Now is the springfield mil-spec a1 from brazil as well or made in the U.S.? Or does anyone know any other options as to my budget and U.S. origin.

Springfield Armory 1911s are made in Brazil. That includes the Mil Spec and the Loaded models. They are also excellent guns.

Of the more common US 1911s in or near your price range, you have Colt and Smith & Wesson. Kimber is an option. I understand Ruger may have one out soon as well. If buying American is that important to you, those are your choices. To keep the price down, you may want to consider used.

Check here for info on buying a used 1911.

Might find a used Colt or Kimber really need to come up another 100 and that's before taxes
be careful some of those, old fine American gun company names that sell 1911 in that price range The guns are made in Philippines

Colt 1991 models have a street price new of around $750. Lightly used/near new ones can be found $600/$650.

I agree.

Back in January (2009), I paid $730 out the door for my brand new 80 Series COLT Combat Commander.

I asked him why so cheap. The dealer told me that the 1991 or basic 80 Series COLTs are $699 MSRP and that he can sell them for that and still turn a good profit.

Just his weekend I saw a number of them for the same $$$ at a local gun show. I'll also say I saw a number of them that were marked up much higher than that.... guess which ones people were buying and looking at.

Kimber Custom II has a suggested retail of $830 and a price of about $750 is common.

Sems like every one left out Para Ord. They are made in the US and have several models in your price range.

Para may not fit in with his 100% American desire though depending on how he sees it. Para started as a Canadian company that recently moved lock, stock and barrel to the US, where so much of its market has been for years. So while it should totally American at this point it may still have some roots in Canada.

Now that you know what may or may not be American made, definitely look for a good second-hand 1911. Guns are just like cars and boats as far as retail price depreciation - and the guys that loose interest and trade 'em in.

Do your homework, get an idea of what you want, then go look for it at the gun shows. Take your time. You'll be pleased when you finally find that great looking, tricked-out custom gun for a reasonable price.

Colt, Kimber or Dan Wesson are all made in the U.S. but finding them for your desired price range might be a problem. Although you might want to watch out for STI because their Trojan has a frame made by Armscor which is Philipino.

The Colt 1991 models are US made and in your price range. I don't have a 1991, but I do have two Colt 1911's and they're superb.

Get one that's used....Most people don't shoot very much. I have had great luck finding used guns at very reasonable prices.....Any of the major manufactures should be fine. I happen to have a Kimber. I got a great deal on it and it's the nicest guns I have ever owned.

Some decent guns are made over seas too. I understand wanting to put your money back into the US.....but if you buy a used one made over seas your just putting money in the pocket of a fellow American. The manufacturer gets none of that.

Lots of choices! To tell you the truth....shopping for the gun is half the fun....You learn a lot reading up on the different brands.
