I posted this in response to couple of AR lower threads, but I thought I get some opinions on whether this is a decent starting AR15. I picked up a A2 Stag Arms receiver with stock, and a Model1sales 20" A3 flat top upper 1-9, ban compliant  , with flip-up 4 aperture removable rear sight, standard front sight, standard charging handle and bolt. Whole thing for under $800, which is considerably cheaper than what I've seen in local stores (most start @ $1,200). The upper was snug, but did not need any mods to fit the receiver. Funny thing that you have to get an background check for the metal receiver, but the upper scary part can be delivered to your door.

Congrats. Nice gun...

Yes, the bottom is officially "the gun" as far as the ATF is concerned. The upper is no big deal.

Congratulations on your AR. I just finished building one over the Easter weekend. I had my daughter's boyfriend help me so he could be suitably intimidated.... uhhh, I mean impressed.

I know what you mean about the lower receiver. When I picked mine up at the local gunshop, I asked the owner there if I put it in my pocket to take it home, was it a concealed weapon? :scrutiny: :neener:

I built a Stag Arms everything for $765.00. The money I saved bought my first case of ammo for it.

Good luck with yours!

:D :D I love that! He will most likely respect you and your daughter. I'm sure he'll want to shoot it as well. I'll hopefully get to fire it this weekend. How is yours working out?

I haven't had a lot of time to shoot it, but we did get some last Saturday. After we got the last part on, and the whole thing assembled, I worked the action a few times, looked at him, and said, "I suppose we should go over to the range and make sure it goes bang." He was like a little kid! Well, so was I. Below is a picture of him firing it. If you look up in the upper left hand corner, you can see my youngest daughter shooting the WASR-10.

It shoots very nicely, and it seems to be fairly accurate. I know I did a lot better with it than I am doing with the WASR, but I am going to put a better sight on the WASR before I start criticizing it. Of course, I would like a fancy sight for this one too, but one thing at a time...

Whats so scary about it? :scrutiny: It may look scary to some clueless soccer-mom that doesnt know any better... but the opinion of those people doesnt hold alot of weight with me.

I myself have no experience with the Model 1 stuff but have heard gererally good things.
My experience and the word on the street is your Stag lower is absolutely top shelf (except for the snobs who will have nothing but Colt!)

As you are considering upgrades (all part of Black Rifle Disease!) shop around for a RRNM trigger. They can be had for $80-$100 and are an easy 10 minute install ,no fitting or adjustments necessary . There are better triggers out there but none near that price. This is the best money spent to make your rifle shoot better.
Aren't the CT ban laws just a PITA? I could give a hoot about the bayo lug and the full sized stock is my choice anyway but it is just silly. The AR is the perfect first Centerfire rifle for a kid or smaller adult and the adjustable stock is perfect for all of that use. I searched out a Pre ban just for the adjustable stock for training use.

Now you have the gun you need to post a range report!!!

The stag is about as good as it gets. I suspect i have the same rear sight and am not real impressed with it tho , as opposed to a cut down carry handle sight or some companys make a regular a2 sight without the carry handle . For red dots , or holo sights this is the thing lol , but for standard scope use some type folding sight is mandated for a flat top receiver. In all IMHO you got a great deal .

Yep, I agree. The upper just scares the anti-crowd. The bad part is most of these soccer-moms vote for gun control. :banghead:

In my opinion, they make no sense at all. :banghead:

PennsyPlinker, great pix of the son-in-law...err...boy friend firing that AR ;) Very nice AR! Which mags are you using? I have ordered a couple Orlite used Israeli 30rd mags, 20 rd Al lightweight, and a 30rd USGI Al mag.

He wants to be my son-in-law, that's for sure. Whether he gets that far is up to her. I go back and forth from day to day as to whether or not I like him, but I wasn't really consulted in the process... He isn't the brightest bulb in the bunch, but he does have good firearms discipline, and that counts for a lot.

I am not sure of the brand on the mags, but they came along with my kit when I bought it, which I got it from www.ar15sales.com. I remember reading somewhere in the hundreds of pages and links that I read that the best magazines were the ones with the green follower in them, and these have a green follower, so that is as far as I concerned myself with it. I will check them though to see if there is any more info on them.
