First batch of 10MM completed

Just got done loading 40 rounds of 10MM ammo. First time doing it and overall it was pretty easy.

I took my time, measured and re-measured powder, COL and inspected every one of the rounds.

Here's the recipe;
20 rounds of 12.5 grains of AA#9 over a CCI mag primer and 200gr Speer FMJ
20 rounds of 13.5 grains of AA#9 over a CCI mag primer and 200gr Speer FMJ

I plan on picking up some Unique and Blue Dot powders as well as a Chonograph at the end of the month.

Test platform will be a S&W 1006.

My goal is to work up a good 180gr Hornady XTP round for hunting.

Fun stuff for sure. Im pretty much hooked on reloading now.

Now, to figure out how to get my neck sizing done properly on the 30-06 rounds.

AA#9 is fine, but you'll enjoy AA#7 more. AA#7 loaded at 11.3 grains of 180gr jacketed bullet--Trust me, it's intoxicating. The recoil is tough. I've used Unique and Blue Dot but in my opinion, AA#7 is more accurate and has better recoil. Also, I'm using a G20.

I Chrony'd 12.9 gr of AA#9 with 200gr WestCoast plated bullets and averaged 1150fps with a high of just over 1200fps. Recoil was okay, but not something I'd want to alot of at one time. I was using my Smith 610 revolver.

I've also tried 8.6grains of HS-6 with the same bullet and the average was a little higher 1061fps, with highest being about 1082 fps.


My practice is to load 10 rounds of several different loads of a powder for a particular bullet. These proved to have the best grouping for the range of each powder.


10mm is a great round. Have fun reloading and shooting.

AA#7 is also on the list.

I picked up a lb of AA#9 at the gunshow for $16.

Gonna get a massive order set up for the folks that were there selling powder. They wont be back until the April gunshow.

The local gunshops here wanted $20 for AA#9 and $19 for blue dot.

I plan on trying out several different powders but have to pick up a Chrono first so I can get the numbers.

Hey folks,

For what it's worth, I get good accuracy with Blue Dot in my 10MM Megastar. I use commercial cast 180 grain semi wadcutter or truncated cone nose bullets. The 10MM is one of the few calibers for which I do not cast my own bullets.

I really like IMR 800X for my heavy 10mm loads. It'll send a 220 gr. LTC downrange at about 1100 fps in my Witness. Recoil is heavy but still manageable. Leading is severe. These loads will literally pick a bowling pin up off the table, and send the pin steadily upwards and backwards until the pin hits the berm. Fun stuff. 800X will meter to about +/- .3 grains in my Uniflow (horrible I know, but still good enough that I don't have to hand weigh each charge if my load is sufficiently below maximum -- and believe it or not, the 1100fps load is well below maximum). 800X is very bulky so it's sold in 1/2 lb. cans. I can't recall what I pay for it, but it's on par with other pistol powders.

I just picked up some Blue Dot today from the local reloading shop here for $19.00 lb. Also got some Hornady 180 gr XTP bullets for $16 per 100.

Gonna work up some loads with the Blue Dot tonight.

Looks like Im gonna have all these loads sitting on a new Chronograph.

My momma is in town and has been here for a week. I haven't shot in such a long time that my trigger finger is hurting. I'm trying to convince her to shoot with me.

All right, any of you 10MM fanatics uses a S&W 610. I'm dying to buy one. There's a gun show coming up next month and I'm thinking that I could get one there, cheaper.

Rolled another 40 rounds last night.

20 rounds with 10gr of Blue Dot over 180gr Hornady XTP in Starline brass
20 rounds with 11gr of Blue Dot over the same bullet in the same brass.

Gonna grab some AA#7 this weekend.

The wife keeps giving me dirty looks in the evening cause I'm spending too much time at the reloading bench instead of with her.

Dang, it's been a long time since I reloaded 10mm. Don't remember my recipe, but it involved AA #7 and 165 gr FMJs.

165s so I can use the same bullets for 10mm and .40 (being the lazy bum that I am.)

The wife issues scares me. Since I got into reloading, it takes up most of my free time. I came up with an idea some weeks ago. Since I have around a thousand pieces of brass for: 10MM; .357Magnum; .45 Caliber; .44 and a couple hundred pieces of .40, I decided to load all of them. Obviously it takes a long time to do so. That Dillon advertisement of 600 rounds an hour is horse sh_t. Anyway, my now ex-girlfriend freaked out because I wanted to complete this project. Heck, I work very long hours, it relaxes me. What I worry about is, if a girlfriend that I don't/didn't live with complains about the time issue, what would a wife do? Can you love reloading and be somewhat happily married?

My recommendation is schedule ahead. "Sweetie, I'd like to spend a coupla hours reloading tomorrow after dinner. How about we go to dinner day after tomorrow?"

Maintain balance.

Wife or girlfriend and shooting and reloading can go hand in hand, if she is also into such things. If she is a dedicated anti-gun person, it ain't gonna work.

As for 10mm, AA#7 is the powder for the 10. AA#9 can be used well for full power loads using bullets of 200 grains or more, but for bullets less than 200 grains, AA#7 is hard to beat.
