Great minds think alike!
I have a Yugo SKS, and a VZ-24, and am waiting on my C&R!
My SKS is the early version (M59) which I heartily recommend among Yugos as it was intended to replicate the Russian as much as possible and has no extra junk on it.
My VZ-24 is a 1940 in fantastic shape, and even if it wasn't would still be an amazingly well-made arm. As long as the action's good (the only comparison I can make with mine is a woman's name), you won't be disappointed. The sights are amazing, with a pointed front post framed in square-sided shields. Kinda looks like (]_A_[)
They are different arms, to be sure. The Yugo SKS M59 is going to impress with its solid build, the VZ-24 more so. With less recoil and autoloading the SKS is clearly the put-more-shots-on-target-faster choice. The round is probably half the punch of an 8mm, however. Just depends what you're after I suppose.
I had great time refinishing the stock of my SKS, which might make it more fun. The VZ's are going to be older and probably better to seek one out that's already in exceptional condition and not mess with it. But, if these are going to be part of the 'pride and joy' section of your collection, do what you want with them! I think you'd find the VZ-24 a pretty substantial upgrade from your Mosin, with a cartridge with just as much oomph. Considering basic similarity, though, I can see why you may lean toward the SKS. Clearly, I say get both! Perhaps the SKS first if you don't already have a good defense gun. I'd say hunt around for an M59 that's already someone else's trusted shooter...
As to which to get first, I'd say SKS if you don't already have a defense gun.
