Hi All

Excitedly, I just received my C&R license yesterday, and now I'm really itching to make a first buy. I'm torn between getting

1) yugo mauser
2) czech vz. 24 mauser
3) yugo SKS

Now, I kind of want all of them, but the question is, which is going to dry up/ go up in price soonest, and what is really the best overall value.

The only other non-.22 rifle I have is a M39 Finnish Mosin-Nagant.

I am not going to answer your question except to say, "Get the gun that, if all three became unavailable tomorrow, you'd be most sorry not to have in your collection." I recently discovered Allan's Armory and he often has very nice C&R rifles--Enfields, Swedish/Brazilian/Yugo Mausers, Mosin Nagants and others right now.

SKS

I'd vote SKS. First, then get the others too. :D

The SKS is C&R but sorta more modern. All sort of options if you want to tacticool it. (Personally, I would never do that to a nice firearm that originally came with wood, but to each his own.)

The price is still up on SKSs but it is coming down slowly.

I recently lucked into a Norinco "Cowboy Companion" and after buying a sight adjustment tool, fixing the front sight, the thing is absolutely deadly at 100 yards. Even with cheap (relatively cheap compared to a few years ago) ammo.

As a plus, the sight adjustment tool works on AK47s also, so I dialed in my AK today.

When I got my C&R I just could not decide what to get first, so I bought the rifle that was getting low on supply, an Ishapore Enfield 2A in .308. I don't know about the supply of Mausers or SKSs.

Enjoy that C&R.

Well I say Yugo SKS and I own one. But that's because I am a defense arm kinda guy. Not sure that's where your interests lie.

That's where I'm torn. I already have the M39, so the Mauser would be another collector piece, without filling a new gun niche. However, the sks would be my semi-auto centerfire as well as a cool C&R.

I would go with one of the Mausers (if the Yugo is an M48 I would go with it due to the bent bolt and curved butt plate), just a nicer overall rifle than the SKS IMO. :)

Yeah, I'm thinking, as much as I'd like to get a yugo SKS, the vz 24s are in better shape, and just have a certain allure that I'd rather not miss out on...

Great minds think alike!

I have a Yugo SKS, and a VZ-24, and am waiting on my C&R!

My SKS is the early version (M59) which I heartily recommend among Yugos as it was intended to replicate the Russian as much as possible and has no extra junk on it.

My VZ-24 is a 1940 in fantastic shape, and even if it wasn't would still be an amazingly well-made arm. As long as the action's good (the only comparison I can make with mine is a woman's name), you won't be disappointed. The sights are amazing, with a pointed front post framed in square-sided shields. Kinda looks like (]_A_[)

They are different arms, to be sure. The Yugo SKS M59 is going to impress with its solid build, the VZ-24 more so. With less recoil and autoloading the SKS is clearly the put-more-shots-on-target-faster choice. The round is probably half the punch of an 8mm, however. Just depends what you're after I suppose.

I had great time refinishing the stock of my SKS, which might make it more fun. The VZ's are going to be older and probably better to seek one out that's already in exceptional condition and not mess with it. But, if these are going to be part of the 'pride and joy' section of your collection, do what you want with them! I think you'd find the VZ-24 a pretty substantial upgrade from your Mosin, with a cartridge with just as much oomph. Considering basic similarity, though, I can see why you may lean toward the SKS. Clearly, I say get both! Perhaps the SKS first if you don't already have a good defense gun. I'd say hunt around for an M59 that's already someone else's trusted shooter...

As to which to get first, I'd say SKS if you don't already have a defense gun.

Since you already have the M39 ( one of the best shooting C&R guns ), I would get the VZ 24. The quality is a bit above the Yugo M48 and certainly the SKS. If you want a C&R rifle that is quality built and a hoot to shoot, get a K31.

Gotta second that...built like a swiss watch that has had its band trampled on with spiked boots. ;)

I think I would go with the VZ24. By the way, who is selling them right now???
