First Casting Experience

Finding saltpeter is actually quite easy. Any fireworks supplier like Skylighter has it. Also many pharmacists have it in 1/4 lb jars. The fireworks grade product is probably higher quality and certainly less expensive. Also, any place that sells sausage and ham making supplies has it. A lot of fireworks hobbyists make their own powders, including the black powder booster charge. I don't know the exact legalities, but apparently it's legal to make limited quantities.

possably down in the states. but up here in canada its hard to find saltpeter.

no fireworks suppliers up here realy. justplaces that sell fireworks.

Fluxing

Thanks Steve 499 for the info on fluxing. Also appreciate the reassurance that it's not as complicated as it sounds. :D

the outdoor casting experience

I just took another look at the pics that Hildo posted in this thread and it ocurred to me that casting outdoors over a fire would be much more relaxing than working in a shop or garage using an electric smelter.... you could make 'smores' for a break :D

For the uninitiated, 'smores' are made with graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate - you toast the marshmallow (sp?) and put it with a piece of chocolate between the graham crackers to make a little sandwich.

Got to try them smores onces.
Never got further than a hamburger after casting

Tough enough to get a fire started too.
Good suggestion: plug in that air compressor and get her blowing.
Keep your distance or you'll blow everything all over the place.
Compressors work! :D
