Well I finally got my first deer of the season!! It has been a long time in the coming. After lots of scouting, tracking, finding food sources, water sources I bagged a nice 5 pointer. He was 100lbs field dressed. Took him with a Marlin lever action 30/30. Home loads, federal tips. He was 1/4 the way coming up a hill directly towards me eating some tree leaves from a small sapling. I never heard him, I caught the tree fling back and forth out of the corner of my eye. It was a straight on shot and with the practice that I have put in I was able to drop him where he was standing. just above the shoulder blades dead center. I was shooting down hill. Didn't have an exit wound, but when I dressed him I only found pieces of his heart. It was a 50 yard shot. He got me back by making me drag him out of the woods UP the hill with acorns rolling under my feet like marbles. His stomach was over stuffed with grass and other vegetation. It was stretched tight. He was trying to get his fat stores up for the winter I guess.
Will have picts later this afternoon. Not real impressive deer but I spent a lot of time and hunts where I didn’t see anything to figure out how they were moving through this area.
Oh it’s the first year that I did EVERYTHING myself. My dad has always done most of the leg work. I wanted to do it this year. Sorry for the long post!
