Ok, I've only been hunting for 5 years now. :banghead:

This year, I finally broke down and got a treestand. I can never get comfortable on the ground and I'm too fidgety as well. Plus, where I hunt, the brush is thick at ground level and you can miss a deer sneaking on the other side of a blowdown or some thick brush.

Anyway, I'm in my stand (half mile up the mtn) at 6am and alternating between standing and sitting, while watching the thick bands of fog roll up the mountain towards me (it rained a lot the day before and that night, the sun was causing the air to warm, brining the fog uphill). After the last fog bank overtook me, I was getting ready to sit back down when I saw a medium sized doe browsing 50yds (so sez the GPS later) away, quartering away slightly. I take aim and put a shot through her her ribcage at about the middle, above her leg. The shot hit a rib, punched through a lung, clipped the heart, and exited a few inches lower on the other side. She ran 10yds, fell down, and thrashed for about 2 seconds. I waited 10 minutes and went to retrieve her.

The 6.5 swede did the job (140gr Sierra Gameking, 36gr Varget). It busted two ribs (one each side) and broke her offside leg (or maybe the shoulder, the "break" is high up in the leg structure). The exit hole was about 1" in diameter. My friend got his deer about half an hour earlier (we think mine was the 2nd one of the pair he saw), so we met up at the bottom 3rd of the mountain and used the cart to carry both to camp.

She's about 100lbs live weight (maybe a hair more), which is about average for a doe in these mountains. I didn't take any pictures because it was quite wet and I didn't feel like carrying a camera around.

Our "camp" got a total of 4 deer this season (camp ran a week and a half this year, I was only there for this weekend and a midweek day evening hunt). The "harvest was two bucks and two does. Not too shabby for seven hunters with various levels of experience.

I'm going out again this Friday. I can't wait.

Mike has said you're one of those murderous types.

Freak. :D

Congratulations!

You know...recreational grade GPS units are accurate 90% of the time within 30 meters...so it's possible you shot that doe 10 yards behind you :neener: ;)

just kidding (well, not really kidding about the GPS stuff, just about the 10 yards behind you thing).

Nice job, do you have pics?

I'd like to shoot a small doe for my next deer. The first (and only) deer I've ever shot is kinda chewy.

Thanks folks!

re: GPS. Yeah, I know they're not 100% accurate. In fact, I've been standing right under my stand and the damn thing says I have 20ft to go. Still, the shot looked like 50yds and the GPS confirmed it to be so within 5 yards.

Can't wait to go out again this weekend...

Chris

You're going out again this weekend?

You already got a deer?

How can you go out again?

I have 5 more tags and plenty freezer space.

That said, I'm going out more just to get out. I like hunting for the scenery as much as the harvest. I was digging the way the fog was rolling up and down the valley (looked like the fog scenes from ED II) when my doe showed up. A good end to a good morning...

Chris

What's a "tag"?

I've never hunted, so I don't know anything about this.

"looked like the fog scenes from ED II"

Are you sure you want to eat that deer? :)

Proving once again that the 6.5x55 is a fine deer cartridge ! Mine has taken many.

Tags: Your big game license used to contain actual tags that you'd remove and attach to the game in question. These days, it's 2 turkey, 1 bear, and 5 deer (Antlered only, antlerless only, either sex). As of this year, rather than remove the tag, you tear out a notch. When you check the animal in (either by phone or at a check station), you write the confirmation number on the "tag".

Fog: I'd be worried, but she never showed signs of re-animation or a desire to swallow my soul. Now that she's at the processing company, demonic possession is their problem. :p

Mete: the 6.5x55 did a fine job. I was kind of concerned that the bullet might "overexpand" at such close range, but it performed perfectly. That combined with the lack of recoil and noise has convinced me that I don't need to look further for deer rifles.

I'm having visions of a very warped McDonald's commercial...

Congrats, Chris. You'll remember this all your life.

The 6.5 Swede is a fine deer cartridge. Like the 7x57, it's a nice combination of power and light recoil.
