I'm planning on camping/hunting on a mountain in New York in December. My sister and her husband own about 33 acres partially up the mountain and then there are thousands more of nothing but good ol' mountain wilderness. Although I came up with the idea of hunting in NY (I'm from Ohio), I decided a couple of friends and I could really use a winter/near winter camping trip with just the guys (and a few bears and deer).

I've winter camped before with my own small tent, but I'm interested in possibly building a base camp. Does anyone have any recommendations on this process; especially a recommendation for the kind of tent to use. I really am starting to like the idea of a canvas wall tent, but they're pricy.

NY has great hunting, with a huge deer yield.

Have you considered renting an RV to use as a base camp?

Cost shouldn't be too bad if a few friends chip in, plus it's off season.

Several years ago some of the guys I hunt with and I wanted to buy a canvas wall tent. No one wanted to cough up much $$. We ended up going to the DRMO at Ft. Riley, KS. We placed a sealed bid on a GP small. I think we bid something like $75. We got a call a few days later and we were told that we won the bid. Upon arriving to pick up the tent we learned that we bought a lot package. It contained not one but three GP smalls, poles, stakes the works. So we picked the best one of the bunch and sold the other two for a heck of alot more than we paid. Might be something to check out. Some bases have them on-line others you bid on in person.
