well went shooting on sunday as usual....

when i'm unloading on some clays with the 9000s in .40s&w, shooting the 180gr. fmj lot #29uc30 ... boom, boom, boom, boom, click.... so i just sat there like, .... well i gave it a minute pointed down range and then racked the slide and found the primer was dented, cause i figured i broke something.... well i got the old bullet puller out yesterday and 50 whacks latter i got the case apart... there's about 5 gr. of powder, looks like ww231, ball powder.... no buring at all, best i can tell the primer never ignited....

this isn't the new value pack i bought these several weeks before they started seling those... i've only shot 20rnds, so there could be more duds before it's over...

just thought you needed to know this..

It's my understanding that using a kinetic bullet puller can be dangerous on a round where the primer has been struck, but not ignited. The primer can be sensitized by the firing pin strike, and made less stable than a new primer.

Given the ungodly amounts of WWB that has been fired by shooters who post on gun boards, it seems like the incidence of failure is pretty small. Let us know how the rest of ammo shoots. Or if it shoots. :)

I'll add your experience to the ol' knowledge base.

One strike and nothing happens = light firing pin hit or hard primer, usually.
Two strikes and nothing happens = something's wrong with the ammo or the gun.
12 strikes!!!! Gotta be a bad primer.

I've experienced light charges with this stuff that did not allow reliable cycling. But this sounds like a dud primer.

In 1100 rds of WWB from Wal-Mart I've had 5 duds, all in my Beretta 92 Brig. at different times. Primers on all were seriously dented and just didn't fire. All in all I'm satisfied with the price vs. quality of WWB.

I've shot several 1000 of the Wally World special 9mm's w/o a problem...what now that I've said that outloud, nothing but problems! :uhoh:

no big deal, i assume you don't carry white box ammo for self defence. price is right, who cares if 1 primer didn't go?

Over the course of the last several years we've ordered qualification ammunition from Federal (American Eagle FMJ), Remington (Express JHP's) and Winchester (Personal Protection "white Box" JHP's, also packaged as Subsonic Duty) ...

We've seen about an equal number of "dud" rounds from each of the manufacturers.

One morning, I watched 2 different shooters each experience a "dud" round, and they were each using a different brand of ammunition.

What are the chances? ;)

Duds

That happend to me too with some S&B .45 ACP 230g FMJ. The primer had a clean strike, but it kindof protruded rearward. I didn't try a another strike. It just went click. I had some trouble ejecting the round, but it came out ok.

I was shooting at my friends ranch. He said that he was going to just soak it in water to 'make it safe' and then dispose of it.

Is this an ok alternative to make a dud round safe?

By the way, the ammo was a about a year old, but out of 500 rounds, this was the only trouble I had. Everything fed and ejected from my Colt 1991A1 NRM.
