Shot my first f-class comp this morning and it was.....AWESOME!!!

I got told a few times that I did a really good job in pits pulling targets, getting them marked and back up in a very timely manner.

Shooting wise, I didn't do real good but didn't do too bad for the first time to ever shoot at that distance. My goal was to have a 6 average and I ended with a 7.2 avg so I'm happy with that. The first match was really rough the first 6 shots, but once I got dialed in, it went A LOT better.

Found a couple of tweaks I'm going to make to my setup, and a couple things I'm going to buy to help me out.

For to network with a couple of shooters out of Memphis and a couple out of Oklahoma. Great group of guys out there today.

A couple of the guys gave me some shooting tips and a couple of other tips here and there. So all in all, it was a great day of shooting and I was able to gain a lot of experience by just being out there and shooting.

I can't wait to get my cases cleaned up now and get my rounds reloaded for the competition in October.

Another one hooked.

I can't count the number of conversations and internet posts with people saying "I would like to shoot "comps" as soon as I get good enough."

They are missing the point entirely.
"Good enough" means knowing enough to be safe and follow the rules. Your early scores don't matter much. You will almost certainly get better if you stay with it.

Oh, I plan on sticking with this. That was too much fun and awesome.

Yeah once I got dialed in, the hits got a lot better. I got a couple of mods I want to do, and that should tighten it up even more.

awesome!

so our scores improved the 2nd and 3rd matches?

tell us what mods you plan to make

how was the wind and mirage?

how close was your elevation to what you thought it was going to be?

Yes. Improved my score by about 50 points from first match to second then down by only like 5 points from second to third, but by the third match, the wind had gotten a little squirrelly.

The mods I'm planning for sure is a 20 MOA base. The base is a much needed mod. Second mod is going to be to either lighten the trigger pull, it's straight factory right now so I have to squeeze pretty good to break it over. Lighten this a bit and I think I'll have less pulled shots.

The wind was a quick steep learning curve but was able to get ahold of it pretty quick so it wasn't too bad. The mirage was definitely there, but it didn't bug me too much. I even had several very very close to X's. it was a slight breeze on line, about 5mph around the 2nd and 3rd berm, about flat at the 4th flag and again between 1-5 at 5th flag. It was pretty cool to see the bullet fly through the mirage while scoring.

I was pretty close on elevation. Started low but walked it up pretty quick. This is where the 20moa base will come in handy. My cheap truglo 8-32x44 did pretty good and tracked very well. I have plans though for a nightforce in the future.

All the guys were great and even gave me a few tips afterwards to help improve my scores.

I can't wait for my next match.

Also, I learned really quick to keep the black bullet hole covers in the pits in my hand. The first guy shot really fast. LOL

sweet!

yep, those do sound like huge improvements. especially the trigger and the NF.

yep watching trace through a spotter is fun. try to predict the score while the bullet is in the air. it will help you a lot later, and also try to see the wind's effect on it.

I do have another question.

How do I go about adding some weight to the rifle to keep the jump under control? My Savage Axis is pretty lightweight for a .308 and I was wondering if adding some weight to the synthetic buttstock, would help with the muzzle jump. I know it should help with the recoil, but will it help control the jump.

I had also thought about taking some paracord and running it through the sling stud and just pull down and back as I'm shooting but wanted some a little more than that.

Thanks as always for any replies and help.

My Savage BSS-S has a generic wood laminated stock with a magazine well under the single shot receiver. That mag well, a groove routed under the barrel channel, and a hole bored under the buttplate are now filled with a mix of lead shot and epoxy. I bet there are some recesses in your plastic stock that could be filled that way.

Yeah, I need to do something to add a little weight to it since I hold the rifle while in prone from the buttstock. I'll have to take the butt plate off and see if I can add some weight from there. I hope it'll help make the rifle a bit more rigid and help hold down some of the jump.

I had a friend tell me that loading the buttstock with weight and holding it the way I do in a prone position is bad ju ju and said I needed a hand on the forearm.

I put one hand on the grip and the other right behind trigger hand to direct side to side movement. Am I wrong in doing this?

Just made a quick modification that is completely reversible if I wanted to, to help add weight to the gun.

I weighed the rifle and it was 9.2 lbs.

I took a old dress sock that had a hole in it. Taped that end up. Took buttplate off and shoved toe of sock all the way down into the buttstock. Took a thing of regular old BB's. poured into stock. Taped off top of sock and put buttplate back on.

Weigh gun again, and now it's 12.2 pounds. So it added a whole three pounds. Can't wait to see if there's any difference at the range.

So I figured out that I plan to add 4-5 lbs to the forend, which will put my rifle right at 16-17 pounds total weight with scope, bipod, etc...

Question is, how much will this throw my zero off with having less muzzle jump and the front being more rigid?

It should definitely make it more accurate and less recoil. I plan on doing this before this weekends comp.

Before next comp, I plan on taking off between a half or one full coil off trigger to lighten that up.
