My personal favorites for:

...concealed carry is a Ruger LCR revolver in .38.
...night stand is a Beretta 92FS in 9mm or a Ruger GP100 .357 revolver 6" barrel
...car gun is a Smith & Wesson snub nosed J-Frame .357

If I could only have one, I'd probably go with the Ruger LCR as it does it all.

I went to a few gun shop today and I look at a glock 19 a rock island gi 199118th a ruger sr9 and a ruger sr9c and a bersa thunder. The two i like the best was the ruger sr9 and the bersa thunder. I haven't been able to find any in 357 with a 3 or 4 in barrel

I would look at G29. It's about size of G19 and with spare .40 S&W that would make it worthy proposition. I see zero point in buying large 9mm pistol.

Well, I can shoot mine really fast and really accurate...much more so than a .40 given any apples/apples size comparison. Factor in less expensive ammo and higher capacity, it is a solid choice.

Not that there is anything wrong with .40 either...

Consider that you will almost certainly buy another handgun and get what tickles your current fancy. No single handgun serves all purposes well and you have noted some diversity in your goals. a 357 revolver comes as close as any to satisfying multiple roles and is a good start. Then maybe a 1911, then a DA semi, then a SA wheel perhaps :)

When I took the plunge into my first pistols, a buddy from work went with me to the range and brought an assortment of pistols. Several .40SW's, .357, 9mm etc.

It was a great opportunity. I have owned long guns my whole life. But did not purchase my first handgun until 40 years old. I am glad to have the chance to try several for free. Now we take others to the range and supply a variety for coworkers who tag along.

I would start with a fullsize 9mm or .40sw or .45acp. Avoid the expensive, like the .357sig and stick mainstream calibers for the first one.

My Kahr single stack 9mm for CCW is a little snappy and took some practice to get proficient.

My favourites always falls back to the GP series in whatever cal you like.
.357 for me because .38spl is such a good home defence cal... And you
can get them pretty short.

AND, they ARE the rock of the industry!!

+50 4' REVOLVER... to me that speaks of GP100. Yes, bulkier than semi's but very capable, very accurate, and versatile. 4" is enough for accuracy, and short enough to carry. Best of both worlds!

The only real safety is between your ears. My vote is get a S & W 65, 66, or 686 (stainless k frame gun) with a 4" barrel .357 mag & .38 spl. It will take on anything from a cotton tail to a bear. Then join Glock Shooting Sport Foundation for like $35 so you can purchase a new Glock at cost ($399 for a 9mm or .40) that is unless you are a First Responder, pilot, TSA, attorney, or Millitary. Good luck & shoot lots!:)

Very good advice here, especially regarding the purchase of a .22LR. It's not like .22LR is your trainer and once you learn to shoot something more powerful, you don't use it anymore. Even experienced shooters should have .22lr pistols, and by that I mean more than one. They are great home defense pistols and the .22lr round is a great deal more potent than a lot of people give them credit for.

For your fishing and outdoor gun, I agree that a good .357 is a great way to go. A small Ruger SP-101 or a used Ruger Speed- or Security-Six would be outstanding choices.

Ruger 5-shot SP-101 and 6-shot Ruger Speed-Six. The latter is discontinued,
but can still be found used at good prices.

I've trained my Wife and Daughters, as I was trained, learn with a full size .22. Once you become proficient, then experiment with center fire, and smaller rim fire firearms. All three are crack shots, love shooting, and are considering CCW. It's possible your training pistol is your preferred SD firearm, but I'll bet you have several guns before long! :D
