Hello,

I'll soon be applying for my first purchase of a firearm in New Jersey. I can't seem to find a thread on this forum - and can't find a search option... - so I will just ask right out: what type of gun do you recommend for a beginning shooter? I know I will have to try a variety of types before actually purchasing, but knowing what I should and more importantly should not consider will be invaluable. Friends have suggested Ruger Mark II and Mark III as well as the revolver Single Six. I have also seen good things about Sigs, HKs, and Glocks. I am planning on sticking to 0.22 round to keep the cost of ammunition for my first forays into gun usage minimal.

Ruger Mk II
OR:
Browning Buckmark

-Or, somewhat older, and usually more expensive:
Colt Woodsman/Huntsman...
(Some such as myself like them more... but you deal with 'used gun issues')

The Ruger MKIII (MKII is nicer if you can find one in NJ), Browning Buckmark, and S&W 22A are your best bets on .22 semi auto. In a revolver a S&W 617, or (again if you cand a used one there for a reasonable price) a S&W Model 17 or 18.

I hadn't considered that; will it be especially hard to find a Mark II? From all the talk about that particular model, I was assuming almost any gun shop would have one (new) available.

There's alot of MK2's out there.

Ruger reciently went with the MK3's... more locks on guns...

But there's PLENTY of MK2's...
