Indiana - Boiler Up!
Hey THR! I'm a new member here, as well as to the gun owner community. I'm 22 and a college student in Indiana. I've always been around guns growing up, as my dad had a collection of 30 or so. I recently got my lifetime carry permit, and my father gave me this model 57 as a gift. I just wanted to show it off, and introduce myself to the group here!

Serial number N74XXXX, pinned barrel and recessed chamber! It's in pretty nice shape, and I'm excited to get it out to the range! Now, to find some 41mag ammo around here...

That smith is NO GOOD !! the barrel has been pinned so it don`t fall off & ya can`t even see when it`s loaded & another thing ,the grips how ya gonna hold onto it with no checkering !!!!

SEND IT TO ME BEFORE FIRING!!!!

WELCOME TO THE THR FORUMS!!!!!

NO really that`s a fine speciman of a 57 & ya don`t see many in that shape!!!

If my father gave me 1 of his revolvers the pits of HADES would have to burn my fingers off before I`d let it go!!!!

Enjoy your revolver in anywhich way ya want ! either lookin & caressin or shootin it !!!

What a beautiful gift! Love the smooth grips too.

You should get much enjoyment from that one.

Welcome to the forum and what an entrance.

Your Dad gave you one classy gift.

I carried a Model 58 .41 Mag as a duty weapon as an LEO for years.

Forty years later, I managed to buy the first Model 57 I had ever seen and I have glommed onto another one recently.

To really get the best use out of yours, you will need to get into reloading. You can tailor that round to do anything you have in mind if you hand load it.

Thanks all...I realize I'm spoiled to have such a beautiful specimen given to me for my first firearm! I plan to shoot the heck out of it when I have the chance, but 41mag ammo certainly isn't free.

On that note, Iggy, I'm going to send you a PM. I've been looking at some info on reloading, and I have a few questions for you.

I also may purchase a nice set of dark checkered grips, simply because I personally like the look. To me, the dark Rosewood with checks and finger grooves looks the best. Anybody have comments or suggestions here?

I agree with the "Old Geezer", you really need to reload for the .41, ammo is limited and pricey. I load mostly cast bullets for plinking loads, very low cost and easy on the gun.

Love those .41's, I use a couple of M57's, a Dan Wesson, and a T/C Contender, they are all fun.

Rooster 1 I am also in Indiana and have been a .41 addict for many years. To fully appreciate what that S&W is capable of you absolutely NEED to take up handloading if you can. You will save much money and find loads it will put into one ragged hole. A simple single stage setup would do the job. That is a beautiful piece, hang on to that one. Warning: people will try to buy it from you. Just say NO. I would be happy to help you with reloading information.

Drail, Where the hell is the quote button? What is a VB board with no quote button?!?

Anyways, thanks for the kind words. Being a gift from my old man, this a a gun that will be eventually handed down to my first son if I have one. No need to worry about it going anywhere...

I would certainly appreciate any information you have for me on reloading my own 41s. From the little research I've done, I'm thinking a Lee Turret would do what I need. I won't be doing a lot of reloads, and I need to keep costs down, so a budget setup is my first concern. Any chance you could run through an entire parts list of what's needed to start doing reloads? Any help is much appreciated!

Hi Rooster1, I think the button you are looking for is just to the right of the insert image button that has the mountain scape, at least in Quick Reply.
Your pictures really do justice to a beautiful revolver. Both are stunning.
TaKe CaRe, and a warm welcome to THR

Nice wheelie. I love revolvers and that one has me wanting to pick up another pretty quick.

I recently got my lifetime carry permit

I wish I had that option where I live.

I just got a Blackawk in .41. Last night, I rolled about a dozen rounds, hoping to get to the range today and see how it handles. I ran out of time, though and didn't get there - hopefully tomorrow.

Back to the point, .41 components are somewhat hard to find. The only brass I could find was at Cabelas, @ $24/100. I didn't look too hard for jacketed bullets, deciding to go instead with Missouri Bullet's 215gr SWC bullet. For reloading data, www.handloads.com has about 4 pages of info. The manuals I checked didn't have a whole lot of coverage in the .41.

Ammo is hard to find, too. If I ever run across it in a store, I might pick up a box - price be darned - just to have a box of commercial loads available.

That, sir, is one beautiful Smith. Enjoy!

That is one of the nicest Smith's I have ever seen. I am working on getting my first Smith and could only hope for one that nice. Congratulations and welcome to THR!

Great start in the revolver world. I love the Smith 41 mag revolvers. I don't have a 6" M57. Would like to add that one to my accumulation eventually.

GA Arms sells a lower powered 41 mag load. I would see them at gunshows and buy a few hundred rounds. Eventually you build up a cache of ammuntion as I tend to follow the shoot 1 buy 2 rule.

A gun from your father is always one that is more special than the rest.
I have two 41's, a Blackhawk and a S&W Mountain Gun. Both I love but they would have to share it with another if I had the chance to buy one like yours.
As another responded: Start reloading. You can shoot hot or or mild as the mood suits you. And quite a bit more often too.

Very, very nice. I lust for one myself. I have a Redhawk in .41 Mag, but do so want a Smith one day. Had a 657 (2 1/2" I think) but did not like it. I want a 6" blue 57 like you have. Congrats.

Thanks a lot guys! I wish I could find a box or two of .41 locally to get out and shoot this after class on Tuesday. Not having any luck though, and I'm not surprised.

That thing looks gorgeous, like it's never been touched, much less fired!

The only problem is finding .41 Mag ammo. Tell you what, I'll trade you this nice .38 special I have for that thing, get you something where ammo's more affordable and available......... :p

Nice piece.

I wish I could find a box or two of .41
Loaded up 50 Saturday night. A couple of guys at work want to shoot one. They had never heard of the .41 Mag. I am going to introduce them to it Tuesday after work. :)

Kudos to your Dad for giving you such a fine handgun. I have a S&W 57 (no dash) with a 4" barrel. It has a rosewood Hogue finger groove grip that I am going to replace with a S&W target grip. I lucked out on some PMC ammo from Sportsman Guide about 3 years ago and I shot some yesterday. I need to start handloading myself!

PMC ammo from Sportsman Guide about 3 years ago

I also loaded up on that stuff as well. Still have about 10 boxes (50-ct) lying around. The PMC stuff used to be my main choice of ammo due to price about 10 years ago.

Check out Outdoor Marksman's website from time to time. Occasionally they will sell 41 mag ammo in 500 ct cans (bulk). It sells out very quickly.
