Going hunting this weekend for the first time. White tail. Cap lock .50 cal muzzle loader, black powder. Family farm. Going with my uncle who is an experienced hunter. I'm looking forward to it -- wish me luck!

Best of luck to you. I hope it dosen't take as long for you to bag your first one as it did for me. I consider all those years as learning experience. After the first few, it seemed to get a little easier, as I gained more confidence in myself.

Antsi,
you and me both brother! :D My son and I going deer hunting for our first time this weekend. We started this spring with turkey hunting. My son (14) got his first bird on his first trip out with my uncle as a guide and calling for him. I, on the other hand, am still turkeyless.:p I'll be using my Winny 94 in 30-30 with a Simmons Deerfield and if the chance to hunt the lower part of the state comes around I'll be using my 870.
Best of luck this weekend and keep us posted whether you get one or not.

my first rifle season of the year is this weekend... i'm chomping at the bit to get out there... best of luck to you (and i'll take some for myself, if you don't mind)...

My first time, today, was a bust. Hubby got a shot off on a little doe, but missed (thankfully, since she got away and we couldn't find her if she was hit). I on the otherhand saw two does out of range and blocked by trees and was nearly run over by the doe hubby missed. Yes, nearly run over. She was running full speed away from him and towards me. Stopped about 6 or 7 yards away. Good thing she was a little one because I would have probably ruined my shorts had it been anything bigger.

Maybe better luck tomorrow.

Didn't bag one. I did get decent shot at a doe, but I was all jazzed up and didn't correct for steep downhill slope and midrange elevation, wound up shooting over the top of her. Muzzle loader, so no second shot: she was long gone by the time the smoke cleared. Still it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. I have pretty long list of "next time, I'm going to..." Next time might not be so far off - I might get a chance to try again during muzzle loader season.

One very irritating thing cropped up - a troop of boy scouts got on to my family's property to work on their map reading and marksmanship badges - so here we were on opening day with a bunch of boy scouts crawling around the woods and blazing away at an improvised range they'd set up. Needless to say, they didn't have permission to be there. Apparently they had permission from another property owner in a different part of the county, and didn't realize where they were. Also, didn't realize it was opening day of deer season. It was very bizarre; the boy scouts usually have their act together better than that.

Antsi, What state are you in? just curious.
My first hunt was not as successful as I had hoped. Opening morning on state land we made our way back to a spot that we had scouted the day before. Just before 6:30 AM a shot rang out north of where I set up. Sunrise wasn't 'til 7:04 acording to the regs. I can give you 10 minutes or so but a shot 40 minutes early and in very low light conditions? putz.
About 10 after 7 I heard rustling off to my left. I waited only to have a deer trot by, hesitating for a second every few steps, at 40 yards. Unfortunately, because of the heavy brush and uneven terain I could only see the top 8 to 10 inches of it as it moved past. Not having a doe permit and not getting a clear view of its head I opted to let it pass. I was hoping it was a doe and a buck would be in tow not far behind. That wasn't the case. I didn't see another deer the entire day.
Oh well. Thats the way it goes on public land I guess. Lots of hunter and alot of spooked deer.
Day two was no better. a pair of hunters about 200 yards away took a spike after being in the woods a total of 45 minutes at best. I watched them come in and I stood up so they could see where my son and I were. They saw me and moved off to my left. I thought they had gone further back but were just out of sight beyond a tree line.
Public land can be a PITA. Anyone in Michigan have a farm with a deer and turkey infestation? :D
Anyway, 12 days left in the season.
