Well, I posted recently on the semi-auto forum that I purchased a new G19, and then on the Handgun General forum that I stopped by an IDPA practice a couple weeks ago, that was going on after my first range trip w/ the G19...

Well, I went back to that range last night, even though I was about an hour late from the start, coz I was so anxious to give this a shot.

I was concerned how I would do, having only the one range trip so far w/ the new (first) gun, that went well, but not as well as I anticipated. It seemed I was shooting my new G19 a little low, possibly from some anticipation, and a new trigger compared to the demo I test fired so well. But despite the risk of embarrassing myself by missing the targets, on the clock in front of everybody, I decided to get started anyway. I planned to get there early and shoot a bit, but had to work late, so had to go in cold, 2 weeks after my only chance at shooting the gun at the first range trip.

Well, I'm not sure what happened, if I lubed the right rear corner better this time, or if in the heat of the moment I didn't notice the heavier trigger, if I just wasn't thinking too much about it or what, but most of the stages I hit all the targets, and got hit w/ very few points (which is good from what I gather, like golf I guess).

There was one stage where I had to draw and shoot from retention, then shoot freestyle from about 10 yds and then shoot a third target from about 15-20 yds. I did well except missed the last target entirely on that one, and didn't know it wasn't a 'limited' stage so I could have shot again, but anyway...

I was real happy w/ my performance, considering it's the first time I ever could draw and shoot, let alone move around forward and backward while shooting. I just don't have anywhere else to shoot except ranges that won't let you do that stuff normally, so this was fun and informative for me. I look forward to going again. I also look forward to going to the range again to shoot some paper and see if I do a little better this time around.

I was happy to see the G19 feel a lot more natural in my hand, and allow me to shoot quickly and stay on target, like it did when I rented one before, I got that confidence back that I could be effective with it if I had to be. But I'm certainly going to keep practicing to become much more proficient.

A lot of the guys wear vests and stuff, which is cool, but I figured for awhile I just want to see what it's like to have to draw and shoot from clothes I would actually wear in the street, so I just wore a loose fitting untucked polo shirt and my loose fitting jeans, that I would wear any day, and used my cheapo Glock belt sport/combat holster, and it went pretty well.

The other guys were real nice too, including me and what not, so that was cool. Ya never know what you're walking into, a tight knit group of people that look at you as an outsider for awhile, or what, so I think that end of it went pretty well too.

Anyway, I wish I could post target pics, or tell you my score, but can't exactly take your target home, and I never heard what my score was, but I just wanted to post about it coz I just had a good time, and was happy to get the G19 out, and shoot it pretty well....

Glad you had a good time.
I will point out that you can practice the draw from concealment dryfire at home, also standing and kneeling cover positions. You can gain a lot without ever firing a shot.

It helps to arrive on time and to pay attention to the course of fire description so you know what you are supposed to do and what you are allowed to do... and not. If you stay with it, it also helps to read the rules, it is a slow process to learn the rules one Procedural penalty at a time.

Thanks Jim.

I must admit I did practice a little at home drawing and dry firing w/ an empty gun, enough to feel comfortable and confident that I was handling it safely, and begin to get a feel for it, so I'd know what to expect when getting out there. So, that's definitely good advice.

Yeah, I really wanted to get there early, at least I had watched the last one, and some of the guys already knew me, and when they recognized me, asked to have me worked into the rotation. And I always asked to double check the course of fire etc., and it wasn't anything too complicated this session, so it was good for me. But I do intend to get there earlier next time.

I also reviewed the rules online this past week, before I went over there yeasterday, so I had that going for me, but I will need to read the details several times to absorb it enough to understand the scoring, and how to participate as anything more than a shooter or hole paster :)

Thanks, again.
