First one-hole group!

I have two Savage F-12's, one in 6mmbr and one is a 6.5-284. I really rate the Savage design with the fast locktime and the floating bolthead for built in accuracy, coupled with the Accu-trigger which works well when you get used to it.

The 6.5-284 is fairly standard but the 6mmbr I put together myself out of odd bits - it's a real tack driver and I'm quite disappointed if I don't get sub .5moa five shot groups.

These are the first groups I shot with it when working up a suitable load - 45 consecutive shots, off a bench at 109 yards on a breezy day causing a bit of lateral drift.

Loads tried were from 29.2 - 30.8 grains of Varget - I settles on 29.6 grains then played about with the seating depth.

And here's two hundred yards:

1066, nice shooting!

I agree, there are some fundamental things about the Savage platform that helps make them very accurate. Both of mine eat just about everything I feed them and produce near-boring accuracy with all of it.

They really spoiled me - something I didn't realize until I acquired my Ruger 77 RSI - a rifle that needed all my attention and skills to get it to shoot groups that were even close to the Savages. I learned a lot in that process though, and am now able to turn my attention back to loading for my model 11 .308 and model 10 7.62x39.

Now that I have that 7x57 figured out, set up and dialed in, I have set it aside as my go-to deer rifle, which means I can play a little bit with the .308 and 7.62x39. I have a feeling that 7.62x39 will produce some tiny little groups in it's future. It's always been a very accurate rifle from day one.

some days you feel like you just wasted a lot of time and...

Yeah, usually when it's breezy. On the other hand it's an opportunity to test my ability to operate under upset conditions. Kind of like when you buy rain gear and learn to perform well outside at work even when it should be miserable. Calm days are more predictable but it's good to get out of one's comfort zone once in a while. Crosswind est 10-15 mph in the morning, going for 400 with 55's and a starting target the size of a trash can lid.
