For competition, skip the R8 & TRR8.
It is interesting to me that some that have the TRR8 love them and others hate them. If it were not for the fact that I'm already heavy invested in 9mm (the main reason I have 929s) I would have at least 1, probably 2 TRR8's in my range bag for Steel Challenge. But anything is going to be a compromise I guess if your trying to compete in multiple kinds of competitions. Some have scolded me for using the 929s, the barrel is too long and 9mm is problematic in a revolver and the frame looks weird. But just about any gun can be made to perform much better than my ability to hit anything in a timely manor. LOL!
The V-comp is even a wee bit heavier than the 627PC, though I'm guessing you'd have to remove the compensator if you're going to shoot in the Revolver (and not Open) Division.
You are correct, a comp will put you in open where most would get creamed. This is the reason why I just picked up another 929 to have one iron sight that I can use for USPSA revolver and steel challenge ISR. My other 929 has a c-more for steel challenge OSR, ICORE open and so forth.
