Well, I just bought my first gun... I was looking around and picked up a SAR1 over the weekend. I made sure the sights were straight and I can hardly wait to get her to the range and put a few rounds through her.

This is just a plinking gun for now, but perhaps in the future I'll replace the handguards etc on her and get a new look.

It was also my first time at a gun show, wow :D :D :D

Any tips or advice from other SAR1 owners?

If you want the look of the synthetic stock, try sanding and steel wooli-ing your wood and then spray with truck bedliner. I did that on one of mine and it looks real nice, plus from what I've heard the wood is better at keeping heat from your hands when rapid firing. Something about the synthetic handguards not having a heat shield or something? Dont know personally since all my AK's have wood. I also just kind of prefer wood over synthetic on AK's and FALs.

SAR-1 is a damn good rifle for the money. Mine is pretty damn accurate, too, at least out to 200 meters, which is as far as I've gotten to fire it. I'm talking minute of bowling pin at 200.

Watch for trigger slap. Some of the SAR's have it. None of mine do. Since you said the front sight wasnt canted, you have one less thing to worry about, although if (WHEN) you get another, a canted front sight is an easy fix (big vise, towel, and a large pipe wrench).

Have fun with it.

Congratulations TCD. You're going to have a ball shooting it. My SAR-1 doesn't have the trigger slap problem, but my SAR-2 did until I changed out the trigger group. I also replaced the furniture on the SAR-2 with a synthetic set and have had no problems with the handguards getting hot, though my set does have a heat shield.

Wow, I'd been looking for a weaver rail like that. Is it pretty solid? Does it lose its zero if you take it on and off from the side rail?

Congratulations on the SAR-1, btw.

Actually, it works pretty well. I only put it on my SAR1 about a month ago (and I have a Millet Red Dot on the SAR, I have the BSA on a 9mm Camp Carbine), but I took it off twice for maintenance on the SAR and it rezero'd just perfectly when I put it back on. It seems pretty solid.

whoa, thanks guys

Another question, what type of stocks does the SAR accept??? I was hoping to find one with a bit longer in length.

I just picked up some ammo today too :D
and 3 30 round waffle mags ;)

K-Var has some nice stocks sets. I got the synthetic 4 piece olive drab "NATO" style, which is supposed to be 1.25" longer than the original SAR-1. I think they look really good and are more comfortable too.

Oh, I agree with investing in a trigger too. It sure helps to get rid of the slap.

Jer..

:D :D :D

120 rounds later, and a slightly sore finger :( I'm back, but she did shoot pretty darn good. Sewer grate off hand at 100 yards... Little on the cold side but the hot barrel doubled as a hand warmer :p

I'm going to replace the trigger me thinks

To get a longer pull cheaply, you can order one of the Tapco rubber buttstock extensions which will add about an inch. Take out the buttstock screws, place the rubber extension over the steel buttplate and put the screws back in - cheap and easy. While your at it, you can also order their G2 trigger group. Not as adjustable as the RSA unit, but it's also half the price.
