Well today was the day. Loaded up for the wildlife reserve to go to the free range. Didnt take anything but a box of Wolf 200grain 7.62x54r ammo, and a few stray box's of 9mm of the case I bought(for which i dont own a 9mm yet :) ). But was the first chance I got to shoot the m44

With cslinger's recomendation I loaded a single shot into the gun to check headspaceing issues. I held it low down from the hip and pointed the action away from anyone as best i could. Pulled the trigger and it went bang. Pulled out the cartage and no signs of any buldging at all. What Id assume, as I asked the guy at the shop if it had been checked. He said it was one of his own rifles at one point and it was in great shape, and it really looks it too.

So I loaded up the magazine full and put one in the chamber. Extended the bayonette(you know for accuracy :) ), and put it to my shoulder. I was expecting a wallop....none of the sort. It barely rocked. Then again I was also shooting Rod's 7mm mag rifle. Put one shot and set the rifle down to check where I hit. I took some human silotettes out the the 100yard range so Id have something large enough to hit with the open sights and my bad eyes. I hit just a little high and to the left of dead center!!!! with open sights and never pulling the trigger from an aimed state. WOW. At that point I was grinning almost as much as Dave was with the .44 mag pistol.

This gun was every bit worth the money I have in it. 100 dollars for the gun, 10 for a box of shells....not bad. Every other shot I took landed somewhere in critical mass of the target. I was getting tired and back was hurting so I wasnt as steady as Id like.

Took one magazine from a seat and sand back. All landed a bit above the groin area, gut shots ;), with probaly a 3 inch grouping....with open sights and not adjusted at all. Im super happy, better grouping than what i do with the scoped 7mm mag. mostly cause I flinch when I shoot that gun. Its hard not to "sporterize" this gun but she is a hoot to shoot as is. At 25 and 50 yards i wasnt missing anything I was plinking at. Now this is a REAL plinker :D.

Yes Im almost down right giddy with the gun. But it just goes to show you the quality that guns used to have. Even with mass production they are super guns that have stood the test of half to a century of wear and tear. Everyone that wasnt shooting long guns at the range all stoped and looked at this gun with its bayonette extended and fireball coming out the end of its muzzel.

Fast fire of the gun is also great. The sights are soooo easy to reaquire from a walking position after a reload off shoulder. Those gatorade bottles never had a chance....even if i missed Id have to run up and stab them if they gave me any lip :)

I've never let anyone shoot my M-44 that didn't have wide eyes and and a huge grin on their face when they handed it back.

Even had a cop come over from the LE range (300+ yards away) wondering what was making all the noise :D

Cheap thrills for sure.

Bowlcut:

My local Dunham's Sporting good frequently has late 80's vintage Albanian made ammo for $5 per 20, paper wrapped bundles, tied up with multi-color string. They usually have the Barnaul Armory-made 200-gr softpoint for around $8-$9 per 20.

And yes, with the 'heavy ball' ammo intended for full-size rifles, not the shorter carbines like the M-44, is is [dare I say it] a blast to shoot near dusk.

My M-44 shoots about 4" left of POA @100Yds with bayo folded, and dead on with bayo extended. Plus, you get a lot of "interesting" looks from folks while shooting with bayo extended.

As an added benny, if you miss the target with your bullets, you can re-create the 'Charge of the Light Brigade' with the bayo extended. :D
