I have been down at my bro in laws the last week, took some stuff down to him, shot some hares for him on the research station (he works for the Dep of Ag) and made serious inroads into his red wine collection. I was about to return home and the local shotgun club was mentioned and it appeared that this Sunday was their monthly shoot.

My Beretta sporter is in the shop getting a gel pad fitted (getting sick of the plastic butt pad), so I had my Italian double along, so I took it. (Urgethecna or whatever it is called, nice gun). Didn't do much good, but had a whole heaping helping of fun! I gotta shoot this again!

It's addicting, Mick. And as much fun as we can have fully dressed.

Do not let bad scores at first deter you. They will get better.

I didn't do that good, first shoot with the SxS, I have never had a chance to pattern it or see where it hit in realtion to everything and I'm a bit new to shotgun competition, I've been a rifle shooter in the main and have to override 45years of rifle shooting. Got 24 out of 75, which they said was reasonable for first day out (but they wouldn't tell me that I stink, because they want me to come back i suppose :D ). Anyway, I'll have the Beretta back in use next time and I'll get a bit of practice at the skeet and trap range in the meantime and we'll see how we go. I only gotta beat me, thats the way I work.

I started out just last year learning and reading about trap and skeet. Plus lots of help from info garnered here. I am on vacation this week, so My son and I went yesterday to shoot 4 rounds each. I scored 23, 21,21,22. I think I am beginning to get the hang of it almost to being an automatic reaction. It doesn't seem to matter which gun I use. My 1300 pump, 1100 field, 1100 classic trap, or my son's cheap russian O/U all give me about the same scores. I am expecting the differences between shooting 22 and 25 score in a round to take a liitle more time. I never keep score while I am shooting. Heck, I can't even remember to rotate to the next station. I am concentrating such that my son has to tell me when to rotate. Either that or I put five shells at a time in my right vest pocket and know to rotate when they are gone and put 5 more there.

I was SO excited yesterday when I moved to the last station in the round and had not missed a shot. As stated above I don't count, but I was realizing that I had not missed any. My son was excited! I was excited! I missed three out of the last 5 ugh! I guess I lost that concentration.

Around here you are supposed to have everyone line up and shoot whatever hat you are wearing should you score a perfect 25. Is that some local redneck tradition or is it common to all areas? I am not complaining at all. I would be glad to shoot up my hat to get 25 straight. :)

What this all means is that I am having a glorious time with my son and our newest hobby. Like I have heard other Fathers say at the range..."It is still a lot cheaper than drug rehab for these kids to keep them busy and interested in something."

I also like to play golf, but this summer I sure get a lot more pleasure from the trap than golf.

Shooting your hat for your first straight is pretty much a tradition. Load a bunch of clays into the hat to give it weight, tie it together, and someone throws it high while everyone else unloads on it. Seems like I end up missing on #8 when I'm wearing my best hat. Hmmm.....might be something mental there.:D
