First they came for the guns... UK

woah

That's scary as hell.

Good thing we're so spread out here - would be way to expensive to implement something like that.

I think I'd be taking up the hobby of camera plinking  Perhaps with a "V" mask on.

If the people would only grow a set, those gatsos would be so much scrap metal. Actually that is what someone needs to invent- a device for disabling gatsos that isnt per se illegal and can be deployed discretely and effectively.

Maybe something like a paintball gun shooting balls filled with some sort of opaque epoxy like JB weld- just fire a few rounds at the camera and it is gunked over and needs a new faceplate.

edit: woops nevermind, those are monitored by live human beings. But epoxy would still work if the gun had the range and could be concealed easily enough. I'd hope nothing like that ever comes to the US.

More CCTV cameras are looking like this:

Official%20Web.JPG

Covered by a blacked out bulb so you can't tell where it's pointing or if it's being operated and also to protect them from damage.

SoCalShooter:

I'm not sure about when but here is one:

Yep, the camera rises out of the back of the van.

Curfews however, luckily enough, were found to be illegal:

Wow has anyone here seen V for Vendetta? Cause you Brits are moving earily close to that type of BS. If you want I invite all of you to come here unless you like this type of thing and it makes you feel safe, oh and if your anti-gun then stay there. :)

Yes but for how long?

First thing I thought when looking at the camera in the article, was:

"From exactly how far away could I snipe that camera cable on the bottom of the housing?"

Yeh I've seen a speed camera (different to a CCTV camera though, they only take a pair of still images when they detect a speeding car, not film) in the UK that got hit by a shotgun blast. I think it was birdshot though so it didn't do much

Not to derail the topic, but I think this is a fascinating example of how blame-the-object syndrome has spun wildly out of control in the UK.

Home Secretary bigs up fingerprint-activated iPods

Street robberies rose slightly according to the most recent Home Office figures. iPods and expensive mobile phones are often blamed for fuelling this growth.

Instead of blaming crime on, you know, the criminals, they're crying to Sony, Apple, etc.. to add "anti-crime" features to everything. But what happens when muggers start chopping off their victims' fingers when they steal an iPod or whatever? Time to ban hands too?

But, yea. If the Brits don't throw Labour out soon, I seriously expect that within five years there will be a camera for every man, woman, and child on the island. Possibly even inside people's houses. Within ten years, it wouldn't be the least bit surprising if they ban normal clothes and start issuing uniforms under some absurd claim such as it making it difficult for criminals to differentiate and target people. Within fifteen, a total socialist state where everything is "rationed" so everybody is "equal," thus (in theory) giving criminals no reason to steal things.

Someone really needs to tell Home Office that 1984 wasn't supposed to be an instruction manual.

They started putting them in around here, mostly in the high crime areas(downtown mainly).

http://mpls-watched.org/

They keep a list of every camera found, some with pictures, and keep an updated map of them. Dunno if I want to risk it but I've been meaning to finally go test out my Mosin :D.

Not yet actually but I've got the gist of it from what people have said. 1984 for the 21st century and all that.

Cause you Brits are moving earily close to that type of BS. If you want I invite all of you to come here

A kind offer but I fear your immigration authorities might have a problem with you inviting people on the behalf of the US government :p I do plan to move to the US but it's very difficult, especially with all my attachments here, work and so on.

unless you like this type of thing and it makes you feel safe

A great man once said: "I am not a number! I am a free man!" Or maybe that was Iron Maiden :D

oh and if your anti-gun then stay there.

You should see my gunsafe ;)

Anyway, it should be noted that as sinister as this all is, the vast majority of the "4.2 million CCTV cameras" are actually privately owned. Still, one government run camera is one two many.

That's all fine and dandy, but I'm sure the government can have access to any camera they want, any time they want.

Britain is now off the European tour itinerary.

Knoxville if full of cameras watching for you to run red lights. Your car had better be COMPLETELY through those intersections or a citation will be arriving in you mailbox. Forget about turning left through an intersection when the light changes. (how many of us do this to get through certain busy intersections?)

It is a racket. Some private company gets the lions share of fines up to a certain point then the cities share becomes larger.

I do not know but I would bet there is some payolla going on with it.

And no i have not been nailed for it yet.

Not yet actually but I've got the gist of it from what people have said. 1984 for the 21st century and all that.

It is about a right-wing lunatic called Adam Sutler (or Susan.in the comics),who was leader of the Tory party facist, splinter-group Norsefire, who came to power a few years from now-so from about from 2010,onwards.In the comics, his party came to power in 1987/1988,after a nuclear war, with the USSR,that left the UK,unscathed and the USA ravaged,by the radioactive fallout, from the bombs.

Both men from comic and from the movie, were Tory polititions, but in the movie,Sutler was a career politition, who started off his career in the Thatcher government, whereas Susan,in the comics was a former Metropolitan Police Commissioner, who seized power in 1987,along with the help of right-wing militant cops, service persons and the deadly virus, that killed alot of people-which allowed him to become the dictator of the new Norsefire Great Britain.Civil war and unrest followed, but Norsefire won victoriously over its enemies, who were presumably members of the old Socialist Labour Party and ethnic minorities.Micheal Foots picture was featured on the timeline. All Labour party,Tory party and Liberal Alliance party members(If they were non-whites or were opposed to the Norsefire regieme.),were used as slave labour and for human experimentation,at the Larkhill detention centre, under the supervision of the cruel sadistic Lewis Prothero and Doctor Delia Surridge

V,was according to speculation,a former scientist who was a prisoner at the Larkhill concentration/detention centre, where he was usually subjected to a brutal regieme of human experementation, using various chemicals,to genetically alter his human genes and DNA makeup. This is why,he became a superhero,(or a terrorist to Sutler/Susan.),when he decided to seek revenge against Norsefire and Adam Sutler/susan,himself.

Later on he saves a girl called Evey Hammond from being raped by the Fingermen(Secret police officers.),by killing them and then he goes on to attack, the heart of the Norsefire regieme,by blowing up.

Anyway, this country is turning into a nanny-state and cctv cameras are becoming more popular now, than before.Soon interactive cameras, with a voice that talks to people, will feature over here,in the near future.I have heard that they have been developed and that prototypes have been made and are still being tested in the labs.

Maybe,in the future they will attatch a gun-turret to it ,a and an operator would open fire on a person,if they didn't comply.:) :)

Here are some pictures from the movie and from the comic.

Talking CCTV pioneered in Wiltshire

A CCTV system has gone live in Wiltshire which enables security guards to talk directly to intruders.
Nine cameras with the new speaker system have been set up at the Kingsway trading estate near Wilton, but there are already plans to use it elsewhere.

The system is monitored from a centre in Chippenham - 40 miles away - and the idea is to stop crime before it takes place.

One local businessman, Neville Moody of Moody's Removals, told the BBC: "There have been several disturbances on the estate.

"This system is one way of controlling the problem and letting traders sleep at night."

Sergeant Nick Cane, of Wiltshire Police, added: "The speaker system does make a difference: it reinforces the CCTV system and the message that would-be intruders will be captured."

A school in Stroud, Gloucestershire, has already expressed interest in using the system to protect its premises.

An old article, that I have found, that features primitive versions,of the prototypes, that are still being developed in the labs.
