Just 100 rounds through it, eh? Good on ya, SodaPop!

Was this a straight buy or a loan/buy? Either way, you're gonna enjoy that baby. I dig mine plenty.

;) :)

P.S.--DMK's right, you know. The best accessory for your new No. 4 Mk. II is a No. 1 Mk. III. Or two.

:D

This was a loan/buy. He's a close friend and I'd let him have it back if he wanted it.

What's the difference between the No1 MKIII and the No4 MKII?

SP,

The #1 Mk III was the Brits WWI rifle.....

Rear sight way up on the barrel is the biggest clue.

Bill Hook are my eyes going bad, or is the No. 1 MkIII in your photo missing the detachable magazine?

What's the difference between the No1 MKIII and the No4 MKII?

As stated, the No. 1 has a rear sight forward of the chamber and the No. 4 has a peep sight on a ladder (as you are probably aware). Actually I just remembered from another Enfield thread that there are a few No. 1s with the peep sight but they are very rare. All these Enfield variants have all kinds of neat little do-hickeys on them that are hard to keep track of but generally the stock, rear sight, and front of the barrel are the places to look to distinguish between the No. 1 and the No. 4. Also, IMO the No. 4 is prettier ;) .

I'v e got both but due to age have trouble seeing the rear sight on the MkIII, am using the MKIV as a deer rifle this season. Neither are a bad piece of work. The MKIII was made in 1915, the MKIV in 1944. MKIIs are fairly rare down here.

The Rifle No. 1 Mk V and Rifle No. 1 Mk VI have peep sights. The former is basically a No. I Mk. III with a peep sight. The latter is pretty much the same as the No. 4, but the No. 4 as adopted has a heavier receiver and a different stock.

Roadkill, I think there is some confusion. There was no Rifle No. I Mk II or Rifle No. 1 Mk IV. The SMLE Mk II and Mk IV rifles were conversions of the earlier rifles and were never given the "Rifle No. 1" designation.

There is a Rifle No. 4, which is the WWII era rifle with a peep sight. The Rifle No. 4 Mk II is post-war and differs from the Rifle No. 4 Mk I only in having the trigger attached to the receiver instead of to the trigger guard.

Beetle,

Not my picture and yes, no magazine.

I think the #1s are prettier (well, not really), since they have a sort of bulldog look to them with the nosecap.

Can anyone tell me what the bore diameter is on these guns? I gotta pick up some bullets at a Gun show and my Lyman 47th seems to be a little vague on what the proper bullet diameter is.

I don't have time to slug the barrel.

What is a No4 MKII diameter usually?

Soda,

IIRC, the .303 Brit is a .311 bore....

You can use .308 bullets, but they rattle a little bit on the way out.... :D
