So I finally got to go out and sight in my new CMMG M4 with WASP 16" 1:9 barrel with removable carry handle and iron sights. I sighted it in at 50 yards with Sellier & Bellot 55gr .223 ammunition.

Here's an 8 round group at 50 yards. Not counting the stray in the top right, it's a 1 inch group (roughly). Counting the flier, it's about 1.5 or 1.75. I don't have a ruler. Anyway, my photobucket is acting up, so I had to attach the image. There is a penny taped to the target to show the size.

Anyway, I am new to shooting rifles, so I don't know how this is for open sights at 50 yards. Is this fair, average, good, great, need to practice some more, or what? I really don't know because I'm not really all that used to what a rifle can do from that range. I'm sure the rifle is more accurate than I am, and the flier on the top right was actually my fault, not the gun's. I blinked while I was firing.

Anyway, can I get some feedback from the regular shooters? Is this an impressive group for that range, is it average, or do I have a lot of room for improvement?

A 2 MOA group is about what I would expect from S&B. you might do better with different ammo. I assume that you're rifle has a 1/7 barrel?

almost all my 10-18" ARs shoot 1" groups at 50 with factory ball ammo. mostly with 4moa red dots, but no different when i shoot irons.

don't assume you're the problem. i'd wager it's the ammo. it's worth $25 or so to snag a box of FGMM, or black hills match and find out if it's you or the ammo. you might be surprised.

Hmm. I think I'll do that. Sounds like it would be fun to see if it is the ammo or me that is getting this group.
