Welp, i finally got out and shot my newly-aquired Remington 700 .308 SPS-V. I got it from buds for 535 shipped. It not usually in stock, but for a while i was checking every day...it popped up, i ordered it online, and it was out of stock an hour or two after that. Havnt seen it since.

Anyway, its my first bolt action. I dont have much experiance with precision shooting (only my .22 target and RRA ar-15) so i really wanted to get into it. Ive done a ton of reseach in my spare time as far as LR shooting stuff/info. So now i just need some application and practice.

I headed to Markham park in Ft. Lauderdale FL for their 100 yard range. Got it on paper at 50 yards then put it out to 100. I broke in the barrel with just surplus .308, and then moved to using Prvi 175grn Match and just one box of Federal Gold Medal.

Overall the gun was great, but this isnt exactly a full-blown review because of my lack of bolt-action's...but all i can do is offer a newbies honest opinion. I really love the new 2009 model X-mark pro trigger on it, with the new external adjustment screw (previous models didnt have that). The trigger is right around 3.5-4 lbs right now with some adjustment needed. But even at that weight it was really good.

The gun has a harris 6-9 bipod and a Bushnell 3200 10x40 scope. Right now the base/rings are crap...next paycheck will go to burris xtr low's and an egw 20 moa base.

The group below is about a .85 on the left, with the fed gold medal. Not pictured is a group i did of .75 with the prvi stuff, but the pic didnt come out well (i swear :D ) Overall i think the day went well, being my first time with a bolt action such as the remington 700. Cant wait to go back and get those groups down.

So thats my day. Just thought i would share.

Thanks!

I have the same gun in .223 and I really like it. Those are some tall rings

Nice. I've very fond of the 700 myself...

Once you get more confident, shoot some ten-shot groups. That takes the element of chance out of it, and shows you the real truth about how well you, and the rifle, are doing.

I think I hate you. <<pause>> Yeup. I do. :) It's just my envy comin' out. That's a good target! Congratulations on your fist bolt-action. That is my personal favorite platform. My own Remington 700 SPS-V in .223 Rem is a literal tack-driver. I keep my round count to a minimum to preserve the barrel life. My best group was 0.182" and the worst is a bit under 0.5 with cheap ammo, and using a 36X scope. Some day I'll get one in either a .243 Win or a .308 Win.

looks good.. A few of us just got the sps tactical and really love them too.. You willl love the trigger adjustment:D

Anyway, its my first bolt action. I dont have much experience with precision shooting
Cant wait to go back and get those groups down.

Pretty darn good for the first time out with a .308! You'll get those groups sizes down , the 700s in .308 I've owned or fired belonging to friends all shot extremely well. I also have a SPS Varmint too in the .223 version. Thanks for the report!

nice gun, I would toss the see through rings and opt for something more sturdy and reliable... I have seen people bump even "good" quality see through rings and knock the sites off badly...

Guy brought his gun to the shop complaining that his scope would not adjust far enough to the left to allow accurate shooting and wanted the gun bore sited... the smith suggested some lower solid rings, customer refused saying he liked having the irons as backup... that is until he saw the smith grap the scope and simply twist, bending the rings back into allignment.. then it was "get those cheap ass rings off of my gun.... where are those that you are suggesting?"
seeing as there arent even any irons on your rifle, I would suggest you get some better quality rings... lower to the bore may help with overall accuracy as well... ;)

NICE GUN though..

Regarding scope mounting, I have a steel, 20 MOA Picatinny base on mine, and medium quick release rings. These bases are intended to mounted with both Loc Tite and epoxy. You'll sequeeze every ounce of accuracy outta that rifle that it possesses. :)

Thanks all.

Yeah, like i said they are crap rings/base right now. I just had those laying around. The xtr's and egw base should pull it all together well. I hate how high the scope is right now, i cant get a good cheek weld at all.
