Just went to Camp Perry Monday to observe the CMP Presedents 100, what a time that was. I have been doing a good bit of research dealing with high power and service rifle matches. I thought I'd better take in some action before I go too far with it all, and now I know it will definately be something to look forward to. I already have a DPMS DCM and I'll bet I will be able to wear out the barrel before I get really competitive. I hear good and bad alike about DPMS, but I think this is a pretty nice rifle. After all, I would think most stock National Match rifles would be a great place to start. I haven't been around long enough to form my opinion of that quite yet though. Any suggestions for the new guy.
I will be looking for a club in the Columbus area to shoot some CMP leg matches, so if anyone knows of a good club please let me know. Thanks

cool! i had a great time there myself. came in in the six hundred and sixtysomethingth-place range in the president's match, but i got 10 leg points on Tuesday. w000t!

you might need to be more specific about which columbus you're in. nearly every state has a columbus.

DPMS makes a quality competition gun. i wouldn't use a DPMS for defense or a carbine class or much else... but yeah, it's a solid choice for a CMP service rifle . of course, you could maybe do a little better with compass lake, or rock river or especially white oak, but you can definitely get competitive with a dpms.

High Power is a great shooting sport! The guys and gals are some of the most helpful people you will ever meet. Most will share the shirts off their back to help a new shooter out. Buy your equipment carefully and once. Good equipment is not always the most expensive. Some shooters may even have some equipment used for sale.

The biggest problem I've found shooting High Power is feeding the beast. With todays bullet prices, I'm glad my primary match rifle is a AR. It's still fun to break out a wood gun though.

Find a shooter who is willing to coach you and you will be ahead. Go to the big matches. You will learn just being on the line and in the pits with expirenced shooters.

So what if you are not shooting a 799 out of 800. Every single High Power shooter I know didn't shoot those scores when they started out either. It just takes trigger time.

Columbus, Ohio CMP

I am around the Columbus, Ohio area. Pretty lucky that Perry is so close for the National Matches. I was really impressed by the atmosphere, great group of shooters. I will definately be looking for a club near by to shoot at. Any input would be appreciated. Congrats on the leg points Taliv, hopefully it wont take me to long to get on board.

Not very close to you but the Miami Rifle and Pistol Club is within a reasonable distance. They run High Power matches out to 600 yards. Friendly group of folks and they run a decent match. Check them out at http://www.miamirifle-pistol.org/

Hope this helps.

Congrats Taliv on the points. You will get them all in time.

Groundhog, I'm happy you went and are hooked on high power. We need all the participatio we can get.

Happy shooting.

You should attend next years Small Arms Firing School for Rifle. Even if you've already gotten into High Power by then, a little coaching from the US Army team won't hurt.

I spent more than I was excepting to at Commercial Row.
