Went walking into the ATM anteroom at what used to be my First Union yesterday, and on the new silver Wachovia decals on the door I noticed three little symbols: one was a dog with a circle and line over it, I can't remember the middle one, and lastly, a picture of a handgun with a circle and line over it. I never saw any such thing when the bank was a First Union, but I suppose that Wachovia in it's infinite wisdom knows that goblins bent on grand larceny will be utterly repelled by a simple request to not bear a firearm on their property. Man, I feel MUCH safer now!

Anyone else have such signs on their Wachovias?

As will dogs.

California Department of Justice says you can't carry on federal property, naming banks, post offices and federal buildings specifically.

Never was sure of the reasoning behind this.

I agree, Tamara; although banks prohibiting legal concealed carry will sleep well across the United States tonight knowing that tomorrow anyone who robs them and herds all the employees and customers into the vault and executes them will be caught eventually by the authorities after the fact, and above all, we must also remember...

it's ok...all the money is insured.

I didnt know that the California Department of Justice had any authority over federal property. You can carry in post offices and federal buildings, as long as your not commiting a crime. Says so right in the regs. They will also give you a lock box at the court houses or buildngs they wont allow weapons.

First Union here in PA has always had that little sign on the door. I always ignored it. Our company used to bank with them. They were always a real pain to deal with. You always had to argue with them just to get a check made out to you and drawn on them cashed, even when you did it every week and they knew you!

Fed reserve & FDIC controls ALL regulations at a bank or other financial institution ...

therefore... the bank MUST place the signs or risk loosing thier FDIC certification.....

wait....

it gets weirder....

Now they are asking patrons to "remove sunglasses, ski masks, hoods and baseball caps and other headgear "...or the teller may NOT serve you.....

it is still just a request to the patron but we just got another TWIX that says the FDIC stateing that it will be followed ...

What about those free-standing walk-in ATMs that you see in the middle of the Wal Mart parking lots? Is that considered going into a bank?

thats a running joke here at work...

seems some courior (a bank employee that is a bonded guard and loads and unloads the ATM's) started putting up the little signs on the ATM's that are out in "hell-and-gone" places...

he puts them up...

and the IT department that programs them keeps taking them down...(MANY gun runners in this dept!!)

they couriors blame it on "Vandanism".....(yes... I know..its Vandalism but I don't bother to correct those that just KNOW they are saying it right (government high school graduates)

AND....

the security people have started to complain that when they "review" the security tapes...customers are wearing all sorts of "Unauthorized" headgear including the dreaded "Ski mask"..

I am still wondering just what they think they are going to do about it anyway??????

out...

OH...and YES... the Fed reserve considers ANY bank/financial institution property to be the SAME as a walk in building....

There's a lot of bank restructuring going on in VA right now. BB&T is also expanding, and has a "no-firearms" policy.
Teufelhunden: If you change banks, please write a letter to your bank explaining why you are leaving. My local bank is being consumed later this year, by another regional bank that prohibits firearms. My letter is ready.....

Same thing here in NC, but NC law also prohibits carrying on bank property. So what am I to do? Switch banks, I don't think so, it wouldn't do any good since carrying at any bank in NC is illegal. Besides I work for Wachovia, and I won't risk losing my job by carrying here anyway. The security at the building I work in is pretty tight. I don't work in a branch either, I work in a VERY large regional service center, and I like my job.

Wachovia never had those signs here in Georgia, and I haven't seen any since the merger. First Union was the purchaser, they just wanted the Wachovia name; maybe they have the policy.

I'm sure the signs are like kryptonite for bank robbers  The bank I work for doesn't have any of that silly feel good soccermommie stuff.

I've actually seen a bank or two in Texas that post the signs that say "Un-licensed carrying of firearms is prohibited", or in other words: CHL's are ok. In fact, I had an appointment with a financial advisor once in West Texas (located in a major bank building), who posted a sign on the window of his office that said "If you're legally carrying a concealed weapon, you're welcome in this office anytime. If you're not, be aware that everyone in this office is." :what:

Oh Lord, I love Texas so! :D geegee

I don't intend to hijack the thread, but this is going on this week in Fort Worth, Texas. More reason to have your situational awareness radar ramped up...and to carry when going to the ATM.

At least the cameras caught the perps doing it on several occasions, not that they've caught any of them yet.

Now they're just famous.

The bank that I work states in our Employee Handbook:
"The possession of firearms or other weapons on or in all
premises or property owned, operated, managed or controlled by
Bank is prohibited."

Have bills to pay, so thus have to comply by the company rules

Unfortunately, are security guards are nothing to write home about.

So does that mean if you bank there and do it when your "not on the job" you can still loose your job? Most employee handbooks I know say pretty much the same thing. I think its more a lawyer type thing for liabilty than anything else. They never provide for your safety after they disarm you with their rules. They usually claim they arent responsible for that. How could they be?

I am not sure where their stance is on that as I work in the
Operations area (I am at work currently) and the building that
I am in doesn't have a banking branch in it. We lease the space
from another company.

I have a feeling that they would be against an employee
carrying while conducting personal banking business. I have
a friend whose sister is an HR attorney and I will have to ask
her if that would be considered grounds for termination or if
since I would not be on company time but on company
property if they couldn't do anything about it.

Makes sense. Disarm law-abiding citizens where they're most likely to do some good.

If it IS a First Union policy, the bank never had anything posted when it was wearing the green.

Close to being a moot point for me anyway since I'm moving to Valdosta, GA in a couple of months and they don't have any Wachovias in town. Perhaps though, I will include a little editorial when I close the account about their firearms policy doing little to make me go out of my way to find a Wachovia down there.

Incicentally Hawkman, anywhere good to shoot in South GA?

I have usually found that if I go about my business during the day (or night) and keep my gun concealled, I have no problems. True enough, if I were forced to use it to defend myself in a business that didn't want me to carry on their property, I might be in a spot of trouble. I can live with that. The key word there being "live".

I go about my business, don't show, print, handle or rearrange my gun every few minutes and things seem to work out. Not saying that this should be done by everyone, it simply works for me.
