First wave of National Guard head to border states next week

The first wave of about 800 National Guard soldiers head to the U.S.-Mexico border next week.

That's the word from the National Guard chief to members of Congress Wednesday.

Lieutenant General Steven Blum says 200 soldiers each are preparing to go to Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and California around June first.

They'll include planners and leadership personnel who will stay longer than the planned 21-day missions.

It's not clear whether the initial influx of Guard members would come from the four border states or from other units across the country.

Blum says this first wave will be part of a longer-term force of project managers who will stay on the job over time to provide continuity in the new border program.

The troops represent the launch of President Bush's plan to dispatch up to 6,000 National Guard members to states bordering Mexico to back the Border Patrol.

The aim is to help stem the flow of illegal immigrants across the border.

How about we close down Border Patrol stations that are 89 miles from the border and get the agents looking for illegals instead of stopping me on the highway and asking me if I'm a U.S.citizen while trying to determine if I'm hauling drugs.
