"The arrests came after a 10-month undercover investigation by the District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Police, which resulted in the arrest of four storeowners and five of their employees, Rice said at a news conference in Mineola."

“The nine men arrested today were openly breaking the law, making a practice of putting profits before the safety of our citizens and flooding our streets with dangerous assault weapons,” said Rice.

"Rice showed a video of one instance in which an undercover policeman filmed a conversation with Tretola, inside of one of his stores, where he demonstrated to the officer how to remove the temporary pin from the fixed stock of the gun, making it collapsible –– and illegal. "

"According to Rice, an assault weapon is defined as a semiautomatic rifle that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least two additional characteristics, including a folding or telescoping stock, a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, a bayonet mount, a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor and a grenade launcher."

Yes, its a ridiculous thing but so far none of the media reports discuss the accused having denied any of this. Disgusting laws, but it appears from the reports the laws were broken.

No much to discuss at the moment from a legal standpoint. Even horrible laws are still the law.
