Fixed Blade Fighting/Utility Knife Options?

I passed up getting a Nimravus Cub from a coworker yesterday for $50. I hesitated and he decided to keep it :banghead:

I'm looking at my fixed blade options. I'm thinking a fullsize since concealment isn't a concern, but not sure if I need or want the serrations? What's it good for?

Any reason I should get a compact, plain edged knife, if I have a folder like that already?

Keep the folder and get the long knife. Carry both and you are twice as likely to survive if they are needed.

The long knife in general will be stronger than a folder [ provided you pick a good long knife ].

I like the straight blades and can be found carrying the Piorick Bamboo Kwaiken in a shoulder rig as well as a few tactical folders.

The more the merrier.

I just got a Becker knife and tool 9" bowie. I cant remember what magazine but one did a test of 6-7 knives and the becker passed with flying colors and cost me $62.00 at the gunshow last weekend.

I have a Becker Knife & Tool Combat/Utility 7, with a (you guessed it) 7" blade. It's an OUTSTANDING field and combat knife. It comes with a nice, ambidextrous sheath and was razor sharp when I got it.

I got it from The Cutlery Shoppe for a good price, about $50.

In the Busse line, the Badger Attack and the Satin Jack are really good-feeling knives, are strong, and are multi-purpose.

In the Swamp Rat line, the Bandicoot is a nice knife (though smaller) and the Camp Tramp is nice, too (though a little large).

If you want relatively cheap but strong and nice-feeling in the hand, look at John Greco's Companion. I don't have the web address off the top of my head but I bought a 5" Companion from him 3 or 4 years ago at the Indy 1500 and have NEVER regretted that purchase. It's going to be under $100 (sometimes they're on sale for $40 or $50) and you probably aren't going to find a better knife of that size for the money (or even for more).

Swamp Rat Knives rust resistance

Hello Harold,

How do the blades from Swamp Rat Knives stand up to corrosion from salt water? I am thinking of ordering a battle rat and a bandicoot for use in a coastal setting but am afraid of rust as I shall be in the field for at least two weeks.

Hah! I don't know. I sold my Camp Tramp to fund the purchase of a custom knife. I bought it mostly to see how it felt. It was nice but I just like stuff EXACTLY the way that I want it and usually end up spending more than absolutely necessary just for that reason. I would speculate that the Swamp Rat stuff stands up to salt water as well as any steel coated with epoxy would, though.
