doesn't say what kind of shoes.

Crappomatic Air-Souls, most likely.

then again with the billion outlet shops in Orlando, who knows.

A dent in the problem my rear end. The people that use guns to commit crimes aren't going to turn them in unless it's a non-working Jennings or some such.

OMG! I clicked the link saying, "Want to bet they'll mention a Tec 9?"

...

Of the 116 guns turned in last year, three were stolen, including a Tec 9 machine gun, police said.

PREDICTABLE!!!!!! holy moly!

It always comes back to a Tec 9. Always!

*.cheese's brain explodes - cleaning crews must now be called to clean the floor*

More Than 200 Guns Exchanged For Shoes
116 Guns Turned In Last Year

ORLANDO, Fla. -- In an effort to get guns off the streets of Central Florida, officials are offering residents a free pair of shoes or a $50 gift card if they turn in a gun.

The annual Kicks-For-Guns campaign is being held on Friday at the Florida Citrus Bowl in downtown Orlando and at the Pine Castle Woman's Club, located at Oak Ridge Road and South Orange Avenue in Orange County.

This year, Orlando police, the Orange County Sheriff's Office, Real Radio 104.1 and Rumba 100.3 are hosting the event.

As of 1:30 p.m., more than 200 guns had been turned in, officials said.

Last year, 116 guns were recovered.

"We needed shoes more than we needed a gun," a man who took his son to last year's event said.

"I have two kids in the house. It would be safer not to have it there than to keep it for a memento," Kim Ponder, who turned in her father's revolver, said.

Of the 116 guns turned in last year, three were stolen, including a Tec 9 machine gun, police said.

The program promotes a no-questions-asked policy.

"For the person that's not quite sure where that gun might of come from or they know exactly where it came from and they know it's stolen, today is the perfect day (to turn the gun in). We just want the guns off the street," Orlando police Chief Mike McCoy said.

Officials said they know the event will not to solve the violent crime problem in Central Florida but said it can make a dent in the problem.

I wonder if it was really a FA Tec9. Don't see many of those.
It'll make a dent in the problem alright. A convex one. More citizens giving up their most effective crime deterrent tools for a pair of cheap shoes or enough money to go to a movie and get the large popcorn.

I wonder if the three guns were stolen for the event just to get money and shoes, or previously stolen. Seems to me that they could very easily be the cause for more violent crime.

now there is a question.

If somebody steals your gun.... you report it as stolen.... and then they turn it in to one of these events..... do you get it back, or does it get melted?

I'll give them a beat up tin foil frame Lorcin or Jennings worth $20 for a pair of
5.11 tactical boots anyday.:neener:
but seriously, anyone willing to sacrifice their RKBA for a pair of shoes deserves to have the 2nd ammendment yanked out of their colon.
If law enfocement seriously thinks that criminals surrender their firepower , then they are more cranially challenged than I originally thought.

I live in Orlando. Anyone have a piece of crap Bryco/Lorcin/Jennings jam-o-matic they don't want? Take it to the buyback and send the $50 to the CATO Institute. I'd like to think that some of this money might help strengthen our RKBA via the Parker case.

great, 200 more pieces of garbage off the street. I'm glad that local governments are paying for trash.

If you're a bad guy, you won't trade in your prized weapon for $50. I just love the idea of a gun buyback.

so do they think that better shoes will help people to effectively run their way out of a dangerous situation?

they should prolly have a disclaimer along the lines of :

"warning: while these shoes will give comfort to your aching bunions, they will not make you able to run faster than a bullet."

I wouldn't be surpised if it was sponsored by someone that is in the shoe business. Left Wing Shoes maybe?

I wonder if I can get $50 for a picture of a gun. Heck, a picture is enough to get you expelled from a zero-tolerance school, right? How about a piece of toast with bites taken out so that it has the shape of a Glock? Gimme my fifty bucks, hypocrites!
