I didn't see this listed anywhere. I hope this is the right forum for this. You don't see a whole lot of CCW in the news and thought I would bring this up here:

Story quoted below for archival purposes.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An argument between several Indian men during a cricket match in Orlando led to an on-the-field shooting that seriously injured one of the players, according to police.

Orange County sheriff's deputies said they responded to a 911 call at 4:20 p.m. Saturday from a cricket match at Cyprus Grove Park and found Francis Singh, 36, shot in the abdomen.

Officers said Singh apparently became involved in a fight and threatened Devan Bascom, 37, with a cricket bat.

Police said Bascom then pulled a small semi-automatic gun and fired at Singh, hitting him at least once.

"The shooter was defending himself from an attack with a cricket bat which is simlar to a baseball bat but it's flat," Orange County sheriff's Sgt. Spike Hopkins said. "For this man to bring a firearm to a sporting event is odd but then again, he has the right to do so. He has a concealed weapons permit and if, in fact, he was protecting himself, he was authorized by law to do so."

Singh was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center and was undergoing surgery late Saturday.

There have been no arrests made in the case as the investigation continues.

I thought that if you shot somebody in self defense that you would be immediatly arrested and put in jail untill your trial, is this not the case?

here in tennessee we can NOT carry to sporting events, why I dunno I guess the gov thinkers think there's no trouble at these places

tkkr not if everything is with in the law and if leo think it is self defense you should be fine, but I think you still have to go to court

Isn't this kind of akin to a baseball game?

Would it be cool for a pitcher, when seeing a batter charge him, reach into his back pocket (past the Big League bubble gum) and pull out his .45 and shoot him down?

I can see the future threads: What caliber for charging big league ball players?

It's called Murphy's Law. Most people plan for the worst and hope for the best.
Police and DA's have the power to bend the law, lie and cheat where they seem fit. Plenty of them are honest hard working people who know enough about the law to see the difference between a good shoot and a not-so-good shoot. Murphy's law says that when you defend yourself, you get that one moron who thinks all Civilians should be unarmed, that you're a serial spree killer, and lies to lock you up.

Being threatend with a crickett bat sounds like a clean shoot to me.

being that im in a wheelchair I wonder what I could get away with as far as a "clean shoot"it takes less to knock me down and so on..?

FWIW, Cyprus Grove Park is just your run-of-the-mill park here in Orlando. I am pretty sure this was a "pick up" game of Cricket which doesn't qualify under places in Florida you can't carry...

but I think you still have to go to court

That depends on a lot of variables. If it is a clear cut defensive shooting that leaves no question for investigators, a statement to the police may be all that is required. If there is any question about you're being in the right and any charges are filed, the case go in front of a grand jury, but they're the ones that decide if you'll be indicted on anything. You'll only end up in criminal court if you are charged criminally.

In most of the cases I've read up on, the person who fired is detained while the initial investigation is done. The weapon is held by police until the whole ordeal is over. The most prominent one in recent memory was a fight between two men at a Blockbuster video in Aurora, which started over a door ding in one mans car. THe confrontation escaleated, and the aggressor grabbed a piece of rebar from his vehicle and cracked the other guy over the head several times (first hit split his face open and shattered his glassess, IIRC). The victim of the assault drew his .38 and fired four times. Problem was, the aggressor's girlfriend had gotten involved and was hit as well (she was right next to the guy, cheering him on as he repeatedly hit the victim). She lived, he didn't. The shooter was not charged with anything for killing the man, but charges were filed against him for wounding the woman. A grand jury reviewed the case and decided that he would not be indicted. IT took several months from incident to case closed.

It's been awhile, but I don't remember the shooter having been arrested at any time. Detained and disarmed, but never thrown in the pokey.
