Fla. Gunman Puts Car 'Out of Its Misery'

Strange News - AP

LAUDERDALE-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. - A man with car trouble is in trouble after shooting five rounds into the hood of his Chrysler "to put my car out of its misery."

John McGivney, 64, shot his 1994 LeBaron with a .380-caliber semiautomatic, Broward County sheriff's deputies said.

When the property manager at his apartment complex asked what he was doing, McGivney said, "I'm putting my car out of its misery." He tucked his gun in a pocket and went back inside.

He was arrested Friday on a misdemeanor charge of discharging a firearm in public. He posted $100 bail Saturday.

McGivney said the car has been giving him trouble for years and had "outlived its usefulness." He called the shooting "dumb" and worries he will be evicted. But he doesn't regret it.

"I think every guy in the universe has wanted to do it," McGivney told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "It was worth every damn minute in that jail."

Florida - where Northerners

go to die. :D

Another one that should be in a home.........

Who-da thunk all you need is a .380?
.380 is all well and good, but as we all know, a .45 would have incinerated the car in a thermonuclear explosion, levelling several surrounding city blocks :)

A security guard did that in Atlanta a couple of years back. In his case, the car had blown a tire. Onlookers said that after discharging two rounds into the fender, he said, "so there," and walked away.

I guess this answers the inevitable, "What gun for Car?" thread.
Not quite that easy.

U.S. made cars are best put out of their misery with U.S. munitions. So, yeah, a .380 is fine for a Chrysler but won't work on a Honda. That soon-to-be-deceased Accord needs a helping of 6.5 Jap.

Got a broken BMW? 9mm will work. 6.5x55 Swede for your Volvo.

Ready to pop a cap in a Renault? Can't, just drop the rifle and run away. :D

Kinda funny, but a number of those cars you listed are now built here in the USA.

BMW's come from South Carolina
Honda's from Ohio

Volvo has several plants in European countries including Sweden (duh) Belgium, Netherlands. They also had one in Canada.

What do you do when you come across a GM built in Canada or a Ford built in Mexico? What do you do when you want to shoot a new GTO? They're from Australia. :neener:

The only easy answer is Belgian Volvos...you just need to use an FN marked Hi-Power.

Richard Pryor shot a car…

…said he used a “magnum.â€

I don’t remember which of his concert movies he tells the story in, but I think it goes like:

“My wife and I are having our last, pre-divorce argument, and she said, “That’s it, I’m leaving you.†I should have said “All right! I’ve wanted you out for months!†But in the heat of the argument, I couldn't let her say anything with out disagreeing. So I said “You think you are leaving? Not in this car you ain’t.†I shot the engine of her car. And it felt so good, I shot my car also. Then the police came, and I went into the house. Because they have magnums too. An they don’t shoot cars.â€

5 .380 rounds, 1 crappy car, 1 night in jail and 100 bucks... sounds like some pretty cheap therapy/stress relief to me! If I owned a '94 Lebaron I'd want to kill it too

Back in the mid 70's I saw a newspaper story about a man who shot a Coke machine. IIRC, he pulled into a gas station, got out with a double barreled shotgun, and let the Coke machine have both barrels. No arrest was made, and no one knew why he did it. Definate tin foil hat member. :uhoh:

sometimes you shoot the car out of respect

Having owned a LeBaron at one time, I completely sympathize with him. However, I would have used a larger caliber, possibly a 12 gauge would have been more satisfying.
