I don't have what it takes to be a real shotgun competitor! A customer came in with his new Ford Diesel van riding low. It was loaded knee deep in flats of Win AA 12ga. He told me he was going to the usual competition this week end. He said he bought 6000 FLATS to get them at $33 each! He said they are gonna go up so he spent the 20 LARGE to keep him and his son in the competition this year! Thats 20K in shells, and they shoot several $15000 guns that need regular maintence with that kind of shooting! They are at the 'choking' guy's place regularly!!!Holy smokes! And that doesn't count the birds and trap fees, travel and lodgeing, ect.! Whatkind of a retirement hobby is this? Makes my gun collecting, top tactical training 2-3 times a year , Western States hunting, Rockcrawling and sailboat racing PALE in comparison!:what: :what: :what:

And the next guy to beat him may or may not be running Gun Clubs through a battered pumpgun, Gordon. It ain't the gun.

The one positive thing he has going, IMO, is COMMITMENT. Where treasure goes, heart follows..

It'd be nice to have that kind of discretionary income. But, I've kids to educate, kin to care for, and a myriad of higher priorities.

If I hit the Lottery for 40 acres and a mule, I'd take care of them first. Fed my youngest kin a bottle today, he's 3 months old and red headed like my Grandfather.. Grand-nephew who'll need some college money about 2024.

I may get an O/U once Son graduates. Till then, my shooting pairs will have a shucking noise between the bangs....

Anything can be taken to extremes!
Still my shooting is less expensive then when I was racing off road motorcycles.

Like Dave and bwhited said, the things you mentioned aren't at all required to shoot competitively. A girl I go to school with was a world champion skeet shooter when she was in undergrad. I don't remember what brand her gun is, but it's what a lot of people would call a low end (<$2000) over/under.

He said he bought 6000 FLATS to get them at $33 each!

Are you sure he didn't say 600 flats?

At $33 each 6,000 flats is $198,000, 1.5 million shells and assuming 23 pounds per flat 138 thousand pounds. Must have been one heck of a big van.;)

150,000 shells- he said 12,000-15,000 a month for him and son (and some for wife.) 600x250 = 150,000 Yup I was lost in the decimals and no he only had a weekends worth of shells in the van; prolly a dozen or 15 flats.

I know a guy like that. He's a Master Class sporting clays shooter and he and a few other guys go in together and buy shells in just unbelievable quantity every year. He's had his K-80 overhauled more than once and it keeps on running. We started out shooting clays together back in the 80's. I never made it above C class and he wasted little time in climbing to the top of the NSCA ranks.

I hate him.

He never learned how to reload, eh?

That is exactly what I was thinking. I used to shoot on 3 trap leagues per week, and that was just 300 rounds. And I reloaded all of mine. Even did it on a Mec 600? Jr. If you get one of those progressive ones you can really crank them out.

I used to live down the street from a guy that retired from the steel mills. He'd set back a lot of money when he started, had his 401k and pension. He'd buy a new car at least every 6 months. Asked him why. Said he had to spend the money somehow.

It's hard to imagine when you've still got kids at home. When they're gone and the house is paid off it's amazing how much more money you have. If you're making 75k a year and you've got no car or house payments, it leaves a lot to play with.

I reload shotgun shells for skeet, trap, etc. But, at 3.30 a box for factory loads, that is a great bargain; I might have to start looking around. I wonder what brand he is shooting?

dang zoom,, i just did a little calcalatin,, and if he is shootin 12000 rounds a month,,, that's 400 round a day:what: for him and his son so that's 200 rounds apeace per day,,,or they have marithon week ends:eek: ... he prolly don't have time to reload,,, dang and i thought i was doin sumpin when we was shotgunnin all the time with a 3-400 shell weekend,, heck i can't carry this guys shell bag:rolleyes: ,,, i used to live about 8 miles from middletown sportsmans club,, big trap club,,,, with skeet and sportin birds too,, they had some dedicated guys like that but i think this guy has them beat too..... how do people aford to do that,,,man he must be loaded:cool:

ocharry

Tell me about it

Still my shooting is less expensive then when I was racing off road motorcycles

I used to race MX when I was a lad, and that was really expensive.

My best friend and his boss drag race, and I meen the big stuff. Never mind the price of the car, which is about 1.5 times the cost of your average home, or that the motor has to be rebuilt every couple of races, but there is the fuel. The fuel is over $9.00 a gallon, and they burn about 8-9 gallons in a 1/4 mile... And its over in about 6 seconds!:what:

For $70.00, I can shoot for an hour, maybe more.

Theres a guy at my gun club that both him and his son are Big ATA shooters and doubles trap shooters that buy shot buy the TON!! I didnt belive it till i found out they have there own trap range on there property...
