Flash Holes

I was de-priming some "once shot" 45 acp brass today and I popped out the old primer and found a large flash hole... so I pooped a few more and they were all large so I pulled out some other brass that I had and they had a small flash hole, So I thought maybe its the brand so I pulled out some Winchester brass (because that is what the brass is) and the stock I have is a small flash hole. Is this new? Is this old? Should I be concerned about it? I was thinking that maybe this is good ... being a good powder ignition or.... maybe to much to fast.... Anybody have any ideas...

This issue has been bantered back and forth for several years. The larger flash holes are for the non-toxic primers. I won't go into a long explanation as to why, but the bottom line is, you can load them just like the rest of your brass.

I segregated them for a while, because I am a picky bas**** and I thought it would make a difference. After some prodding, well, a lot of prodding, from Reloader Fred and The Bushmaster, I quit, and I could not tell a difference with them all mixed up together. I no longer worry about it.

Non-toxic? I'm not gonna eat them. Thanks for the information! I just looked at my primers no "non-toxic" in the bunch.... I'm doomed....

A lot of those non-toxic rounds also use small pistol primers (standard .45ACP uses large pistol primers) ... I've run across more than a few of them... they deprime OK, but you'll have press stoppages when you go to prime them... I generally toss 'em.

I don't toss 45acp with small primer pockets. I save them for an annual local match at the police range where they don't let you collect your own brass. They keep your brass for themselves.
Ha! They can have them small-primer suckers! Ha!

I know that at least SOME if not ALL of the NT's are for small pistol primers.

Do they have a mix (SP AND LP) or are they just small pistol?

I have a friend that shot in 45 matches and he would drill the flash hole with 1/8" bit. He liked the large flash hole and believed that it made the powder ignite faster. I shot a box of mixed brass and could tell any difference

The early NT primers were large pistol in the .45 acp. Now Winchester loads small pistol primers in their NT rounds. I believe some others do as well, but can't remember which ones off the top of my head.

A lot of the NT primers are crimped in the military fashion, and the crimp will need to be removed. This was more prevalent in the LP primed NT brass, but I've seen some of the SP primed brass that was also crimped.
