I have the chance to buy this from a good friend of mines, parents, friend who's husband died. She has no clue as to the value and am wondering what this gun is worth on the open market.

Here is the pic.

I was told those original "factory" grips could be worth a bit by them selves.

$375? Huh? That price might be appropriate for a new model Anniversary flattop, but this original flattop is more valuable.

The gun appears to be in good shape. If it has the original lockwork I would estimate the price to be at least $600-$650 and possibly more. Best bet would be for you to look on gunbroker.com at a few of the completed auctions for similar guns.

need better pics but any flattop .357 is worth $300+, if unconverted, these guns are getting real hard to find, any rust? what about the other side of the barrel any bluing loss? if no to both it's a real gem and quite a find. Original box could add $150 to the value so look for it. With box and in 95% I'd guess $700-$800 @ auction.

New model "Anniversary Models" go for $449 NIB, in my area. My boss isn't
one to covet original boxes, as far as price goes. He would figure maybe
$25 at the max; and might bump my original guesstimation to $400; but
that would be his final answer~! :scrutiny::eek::(

If the gun is unconverted I'd say $500 minimum, that's assuming it's a .357. There were several variations of flat-top .357s also, some will be worth more. And if it is one of the extremely rare 4 5/8" .44 Mags, then someone just won the lottery! But chances of that are astronomically high, so don't get your hopes up. You should really get better pics and a more complete description and ask on the Ruger forum.

If it's a real flat top and not just an OM, you're looking at five bills even if it's lost some blue. But be warned there are many different subtypes as Ruger was shifting around back then quite a bit. Check in at the Ruger forums.

I just bought a Flat top in .357 Magnum for $450. It has some obvious use wear and is not in anywhere near showroom condition. No box or papers, neither.

If the blue is as clean as it looks in the picture, I'd say it'll go for $550 to $650. This may vary from location to location and I'm thinking retail, not wholesale.

A few additional points:

1 - Ruger never offered any 4 5/8" flattop .44 Mag Blackhawks. There is a rumor of 1 gun made in such configuration that was presented to Elmer Keith. To the best of my knowledge it has never been found.

2 - The gun in question is an original .357 flattop based on the pictures. This is easily determined by the frame topstrap and the hard rubber grips.

3 - Ala Dan - If your boss would price this exact gun at $400 then I will personally buy every single one from him that is available. Not only would I keep a few but I would easily resell all of them for a nice profit.

Thanks for the tips, guys! I am hoping to see it in person this weekend along with the other stuff for sale.

She also has some reloading stuff and several rifles (all Remington bolt actions including a beautiful 40X in .222 with Unertl bench rest scope and a Remington in .244 Remington.).

Got the flattop for $300. I'm currently awaiting FFLs/Shipping. Will post more info and better pics when I have it in my hands!

Thanks for all the info/insight!

Super Deal! ! ! !

I never seem to stumble into those deals, though.

One consideration, which you probably already know, is that if that 3-screw Old Model hasn't been 'saftey bar' converted, DO NOT LOAD & CARRY IT 6-UP!
Load 5-up ONLY. Let hammer down on the empty chamber.

Sorry, pardon my shouting. I did see a shooting budd once load up a 3-screw unconverted Old Model 6-up. He didn't understand that a really good whack on the hammer WOULD make it go off, untill he learned it the hard way. No damage done to anything but Pride & Ego
