I don`t own a flinter .. and i seem to be the only one in the club i`m in that don`t .. everyone shoots real black no subs .. the question is .. will the subs. like pyrodex work in a flinter .. i read somewhere that they wouldn`t .. and i don`t know anyone that has ever tried . the real black is getting so hard to find , i don`t think it would be a good time for me to buy one if the subs are a no go ..

Read somewhere that some of the subs have a higher ignition temperature, which could affect the reliability of a flinter, I suppose. I know my 1860 C&B revolver vastly prefers BP to Pyrodex.

There's a couple places online that will ship Goex (real black powder). I've only ever shot Goex or Elephant black. Everything I've ever seen or heard, though, says that Pyrodex and suchlike are cap-only.

I have heard that you can shoot subs, but you have to prime it with the real stuff first.

Here is what the Hodgdon's site says about 777 and pyrodex:

Flintlock: To insure proper ignition in flintlock systems, 5 grains of FFFFG priming powder should be placed into the bore prior to loading the main charge of Triple Seven or Pyrodex. Consult the loading data in this brochure to determine the proper charge for the caliber firearm used and the chosen projectile. The main powder charge should be reduced by 5 grains to compensate for the addition of the priming powder. While holding the firearm vertically, slowly pour the measured charge of Triple Seven or Pyrodex into the barrel. Seat the projectile firmly against the powder. Make certain that there is no airspace between the powder and the projectile.

well that explains it .. i kinda figured if the subs would work at all i would need real black 4f for primeing the pan . that wouldn`t be a problem , a pound of primming powder last a long time .. thanks
