Flintlock for lefty?

I shoot rifles left handed. I'd like to get a flintlock but I'm worried that if it's not designed for a lefty that I'll get a face full of burning powder. I've never shot a flintlock. Can anyone comment?

There are flinlocks made for left handed shooters. They're not widely available; and can get pricey; but they are out there.

This is something to think about. It can be put on a rifle like this. Don't ask
me if it is a left hand flintlock. I shoot right handed, but am left eyed.

I can't find a left handed rifle of style I like I can afford . I really don't think many people in the 1700 and 1800's could afford a Left handed flint lock either. I am sure not every one learned to shoot R/handed What if blind or impaired in R eye You adapt and go on
I have a ky type flint lock and I fire it L/handed my face is way back from lock and I have never saw it as a problem I also shoot r/handed cap rifles (Hawkins type ) I don't my self see it as any big deal . Every body has to decide whats right for them

I shoot a flint lefty, if a fellow doesn't use too much priming powder it really isn't an issue.

Lyman GPR is your best option - I'm a lefty with a rock-lock GPR .50. They are great for patched round-ball, and i've bumped off a few deer and one groundhog with mine.

The other option, if you get a military-type musket, is a flash-guard on the pan...meant to contain the flame so the guy to the right in the skirmish-line won't get the breech flash in his face. However, with this option, i'd still recommend a surplus pair of ESS goggles...if you covet your eyebrows!

Left Flint

I have a left handed GPR in .54 flint and I love it. I also have a right handed percussion GPR and the flash doesn't bother me at all. I have owned and shot right handed flintlocks and the flash is not an issue. Cocking and mounting the gun smoothly are a reason to get a left handed rifle in my opinion. Incidentally, right handed flintlock pistols are easier to work with because they easily cock with the off hand.

I agree with the GPR, you don't want a rifle that's too cheap. Good entry level rifle.

At Dixie Gun Works they had or have again...the Tennessee Mountain Rifle .50 by Miroku. I have one in lefthand had both interchangable locks cap & flint(like a fool sold the flint, lock). Xlint rifles real tack drivers.
