I read a few suggestions for removing broken or stuck parts inside a cap muzzleloader.....

with the flint and small hole for ignition, how would one go about removing a broken ram rod tip from it...

thanks

Pour some priming powder over the touch hole and use a pin to force it in, if you have a removable liner it will be a bit easier.

Drop the ramrod in and mark off on the ramrod where it stops. Then remove the rod. Afterwards, pour a small amount of powder into the barrel via the touchhole and making sure the muzzle is pointed in a safe direction, fire it off. Then reintroduce the ramrod to see if it is clear or to measure how much further down the barrel that critter went. Repeat the process until it's clear.

Alternatively, you can have the breechplug pulled and use a dowel rod & mallet to drive it out. Be sure the breechplug is marked so you can get it realigned when you reinstall it. Remove the barrel first and clamp it in a vise. Be sure to have copper plates or leather pads so as not to mar the barrel. Then, to remove the breechplug, you can use a crescent wrench and wrap some leather around the tang. Get as close to the thick part of the plug as possible. Give it a few turns counter-clockwise until the plug is free from the barrel. Drive out obstruction, clean out the bore and the bottom of the breechplug, and then reinstall.

Just wondering...

How much stress not seating the jag against the powder will cause. I did this once with my .36, dry balled it. Realized it as soon as I short started the ball. I put in a pan's worth of FFFFg and touched it off. Everything came out my flashpan. Actually left scorch marks. Put more powder in, seated the ball and got a "poop" and a clear bore.

Eh, spend $30 bucks and get one of those CO2 dischargers with the attachment for a flintlock. Get a buddy to work the charger while you hold the rifle. Works a heck of a lot better than the 'trickle powder in' method.

Bought one a while back after I had to pull a ball on a load that wouldn't fire at a match. Next year showed up with the CO2 thing, blew a half dozen no powder/short started and stuck loads out of barrels, and now most everyone on the line at the shoot this year had one.
