Trying out my recently purchased FN 49 (Venezuelan, 7mm) and it doesn't seem to like the S&B stuff so well. I bought a bunch of it for 7.99 a box from a shop that didn't seem to have gotten around to updating prices. It doesn't seem to be getting enough juice really eject the empties and about half the time it jams up. So I'm wondering if the S&B stuff is loaded light to be safe in older 7mm Mauser rifles or if the gas setting is perhaps in need of adjustment. I have a bunch of old FN manufacture ammo (late 40's, corrosive) but have been hesitant to try it as it will be a hassle to clean it out afterwords. I'm assuming that if I open up the gas setting for the rifle to operate on lower pressure ammo and then start shooting the hotter old stuff then the operation will be a overly violent?

Anybody have experience tweaking the FN 49?

No experience, but if it was mine, I would sell the corrosive stuff and adjust the port for the S&B ammo. Keep your FN49 free of the corrosive stuff. Do you reload? S&B is generally boxer primed and reloadable.

Yeah, I'm not particularly thrilled at the idea of taking the thing apart to fully clean after shooting. It's one thing to pour water down the barrel of a Mosin Nagant and hose it off with WD40 afterwords..... I just don't see myself doing that with the 49. On the other hand I'm sure they were shot with corrosive ammo while they were in service and survived.

No doubt they were subjected to corrosive stuff, and the fact that the gas system was chromed proved fairly effective. Even those parts eventually will develop corrosion if not field stripped and cleaned fully after firing corrosive stuff.
