I see these are going for $7-8000. Why are they half the price of an AR or AK?

What are the downsides to these rifle? Parts?

Parts and lack of the familiarity/panache of the M-16 were the reasons I was given when I was drooling over them a few years ago. They were never really heavily adopted by large militaries. They didn't perform acceptably in their first trials, but the problems were apparently solved later.

Fell in love with the FNC when I watched Heat. If I ever go FA, the FNC is what I'll do. I'll learn how to use a mill and lathe if that's what it takes to keep it firing.
