Can anyone tell me about FN's Forty-Nine pistol. I'm especially interested in the 9mm version. Also, has FN discontinued the Forty-Nine. I'd appreciate any info/opinions concerning the Forty-Nine anyone can provide. Thanks.

no i think they are still making the 49, but do know that as a seller it fell flat of what they and the world was expecting. if you like the 49 then why not look at the FNP-9 its a much more capable gun.

I had an FN FortyNine in 9mm for about a year or so. Got a great deal when I bought it. The gun was well made and had a great feel to it. Didn't like the trigger pull - it was very long and heavy, other than that I had no complaints. The gun was very accurate and 100 % reliable.

Ended up trading it for a Stainless Vaquero with a buddy who shoots it a lot and hasn't had a single problem with either. I think it's a great gun for such a low price. I liked it better than my Glock.

Alan, you're looking at their military divison web-site. The FN-USA website is under construction, but I did find this:

http://www.fnherstal.com

And it looks like the forty-nine has been dropped.

HogRider, the long trigger is exactly what I'm looking for.

What I want in essence is a high capacity revolver. I don't want the short action of Glock or Steyr. Thus far the two pistols that I found closest to my criteria are the Taurus 24/7 and the FN forty-nine. I'd appreciate any other suggestions. Though I really did like the forty-nine I handled yesterday. Whichever one I pick needs to be 100% reliable.

The FN BDAO looks like it may fit the bill though, anyone have any experience or info on that pistol also? Thanks

I REALLY like my Forty-Nine. It is actually the stainless 40 model. The grips are perfect for me. There are no grooves, no weird backstrapping. The pebbled grips are almost like the Gen 1 Glocks, but close to a Robar job grip stipling refinish. Yeah, the trigger is heavy, but I like it. The RSS reset is pretty good and smooth. I bought it for a great deal, and actually like it better than the Sigma 40 I originally planned to buy. I bought the 40VE recently, and I like it, too. The Forty Nine is a better gun, though. It strips like a Kahr. You can find them for $250-300 on the used market. If the magazines are dumping them at $279 or so, expect the total to be around $300 with shipping, and FFL fee, etc. The thing I like most about the Forty Nine is the slide top configuration. It is round; almost like a 1911. SIG holsters will generally fit this gun. The FNP-9 is a bit more expensive, and has a manual freame safety and some backstrap inserts. I saw one for $540, but I hear they are also on clearance for some of the old models. I shall wait for the $300 opporutnity. I can get about 3-4 inch groups shooting off hand at 15 yds, slow fire. Recoil is typical of 40 from a polymer handgun.

My FN Forty-Nine in .40 (blackened stainless) has been my #1 carry gun for nearly a year now.

It is the most ergonomic handgun I own and goes bang everytime. I take this gun to the range every time I shoot and it was the first gun I qualified with when I got my CCW.

I would say buy one iIF you like DAO guns.
If you prefer DA/SA, I would suggest the FNP-9 or FNP-40.

In either respect, you will pay less for a gun that is identical to any sig/Glock/HK in build quality.

FN is IMHO the finset gun maker on the planet. In contrast to what was posted above, many USP holsters will accomadate the Forty-Nine.
Best DAO sidearm if you appreciate polymer guns. If you only want steel, please step out of the dark ages, Plastic is the way things are going.
