For those of you considering buying a PS90 in the near future - here's some info and eye-candy. They can still be found somewhat inexpensively, and make great shooters. Now that 5.56 and 5.7 cost about the same thing, the 'expensive ammo' argument against it is just about null and void.

An In-Depth Look at the FN PS90

Fabrique Nationale de Herstal, or National Factory of Herstal to those of us not well versed in the French language, is one of those multi-billion dollar firearms companies that the average shooter may have never even heard of. Commonly known as FN, the company has assets in the USA, and manufactures guns under the Browning (since the brand’s inception) and Winchester (since 1989) names. FN is headquartered in (the French part of) Belgium, just outside the city of Liege. Unlike quite a few other firearms companies in Europe, FN actually started out as a gun factory. Since its inception in 1889, the company has gone on to produce such all-time greats as the FN FAL, the P35 (Browning) Hi-Power, and the M240-series medium machine guns currently in use by the US military.

FN is one of those often overlooked major contributors to the advancement of firearms technology. The guns developed and marketed by the company have helped shape the face of modern warfare, while also making a significant contribution to the civilian small arms market. Even in today’s “gun-unfriendly” political climate, FN continues to keep its civilian customers as a core part of its business strategy. As such, the company regularly brings civilian versions of its most technologically advanced guns to market. Because of this, we all benefit from the reduced weight of new materials, the increased efficiency of modern cartridges, and the lower cost and higher reliability of new gun platforms. Yes, the hunter does benefit from all of these “scary” looking “assault” rifles. Instead of humping a 10-pound scoped delicate bolt gun through the desert, he/she can now tote a compact, 6-pound gun that is just as accurate (for practical purposes, of course) and will probably still work after being thrown off a cliff!
The FN PS90 is just one example of the many hot new items FN has offered to us in recent years...

thanks alot.
considering getting one. But with no integral sight. where did you get yours from again?

It looks like it would be a fun plinker, but I can't justify the price of one myself. Being on a fairly tight budget, most of my rifles have to be capable of multi-tasking, and that little bitty bullet doesn't scream "self/home defense" or "big game killer" to me. I'll pass for now. Good write up though.

OK Question!
Can you purchase a PS90 then register it later as a SBR and convert to a P90?

Great write up and pics.
Thanks

yes and no. you can SBR it, but it will never be a p90

Correct - you can only shorten the barrel.

The law would not allow the private ownership of a machinegun unless it was made prior to the 1986 law.

I love mine, just have to fight the 12 year old for it.

I think he's got close to 500 rounds through the thing already.
I just can't get it away from him......

The PS90 in the write-up is one we actually ordered for a customer from RSR. We should've gotten at least 2 of them at their sale price - unfortunately, they're back up to normal price now :banghead:

Speaking of P90 - I was at the Scottsdale Gun Club the other day, and the range officers were letting their new employee have a spin on their class III guns. One of them was a P90. Man, as cool as the PS90 is, it is even cooler with a 10" barrel, and in full auto

I like everything about the PS-90 except the civilian barrel. I'm not sure I would want one that wasn't SBR'ed. Is 16" any advantage with this cartridge?

Civilain 16 inch barrel

the 16 inch barrel isn't so bad, just makes finding a case for it a bit more annoying. I have never fired a P90 but I have read a lot about the ballistic characteristics of both versions. The PS90 gives you more velocity and improved accuracy at range. I think it was in the range of 200 fps increase or so, so pretty good. With a reflex site I shoot about 10 inch groups at 50 yards (ok so I need a bit of practice hehe). I think someone else posted a link to another forum that talks about FN weapons...I do not remember the link off hand but it is a good resource to check out if you are considering buying any of the FN products they talk about.

Clerihew

The link is www.fnforum.net

Actually - on sandbags - I can get 1/2" groups at 50 yards.

I don't sweat it about the barrel. You get used to the looks after a while - and even with the 16" barrel - the gun is shorter than a short barrelled AR15!

I'd like to get a PS90 for no other reason than that gun is in many of my XBox games. I have purchased many guns based only on video games and movies. Kind of weird huh?

If I can locate a gently used one for $1k, I'll probably go for it. I doubt it will be shot much due to the cost of 5.7 ammo, but hey, I have many guns that have never been shot due to the price of their ammo requirements....

game or tv show...

Well buying it because its in an xbox game is no different than me...I am a Stargate SG1 fan and they started using the P90 in the middle of the series and I said if they ever make a civilian model of that I want one! I liked it because of the concepts. 50 round magazine, bullpup, ambidextrous and the bottom ejection port. Seemed to be a good, modern weapon with some interesting design implimentations.

My next rifle I am going to get is the Keltec RFB chambered in .308 and with a 40 inch barrel, it has many modern improvements including a bullpup design, ambidextrous and forward ejection port. I guess that the PS90 is a good 50 yard weapon now I want something that goes farther...though I will have to wait, it wont be out until fall of 08 IF they get it out when they say.
