I'm looking to pick up a hi-power in the not too distant future. I've seen the Argentine FM for arund $300 and I've seen the FN for around $400. Is there really $100 worth of difference between the two? I've heard good things about both. Is there anybody here who's owned both that could give me a rundown of the differences? Thanks in adavance!

I have an FM Detective model (the one with the shortened barrell/slide) and its worked great for me so far. I got it over the FN because A) the FNs in my area are allot more than $100 more than the FMs and B) I wanted something more compact than my 1911. However if you want a full size one, and there is only a $100 price difference, then you should probably go for the FN. After all as Marshall said, it's the original.

If by FM, you mean the newer production M90 or M95 then it is a no brainer, the FN is the way to go for only $400. These are real Hi Powers made in Belgium and are $600 guns. poppy

I have an FM and a browning practical that i picked up for $400 :)

I can't tell the difference in the dark, if it wasn't for the sights, grips, and engraving.

They both shoot wonderful, and I'm very pleased with the FM. Were i going to send a gun away for customizing, it would be the Browning, or purchase an FN, just due to retained value.

However, the FM is a wonderful value.

+1 to POPPY

...Only difference is that here in the Democratic Peoples Republic of New Jersey they're $700 guns...

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies! I do have a couple more questions, though. What is the SFS system? Also, how is the hi-power in .40? I've shot a Glock 23 before and didn't care for it. It just felt way too snappy for me. Will the Hi-power be similar, or would it be a milder recoil? I understand that the Hi-power is heavier, so that would make a difference. I've just never really given the .40 much consideration until now. Since this will also get carried some, I figure it might be worth checking out. Thanks again!

which Hi-Power

I've owned a bunch of Hi Powers, from WWII trophys to the new FM Detective Model.

I love my T ser # model from Belguim, it's blue is as deep as the ocean. Almost a shame to risk scratching it. On the other hand, my Detective Model FM really seems to balance and carry better, though it is only an inch shorter. The fact that I don't care what happens to the black hard coating helps too. On mine, the original safety had to go. I shoot lefty and need an ambi safety. While at the shop I'd have the trigger worked on a bit by someone who knows what he's doing. The three dot sights could be a little brighter...better painted.

It's one of my two favorite carry guns now, the other a S&W 640-3. Still not sure which one is easier to hide.

Some people are a little leary of the dual recoil springs on the shorter barreled Detective model. If it was only $100 difference, and you didn't want the extra concealment, I guess I'd take the original.

Can't speak for the .40, never bought one. heard they shoot ok but the balance and handling qualities are "different". I also don't like the Stainless ones, the blue and stainless ones, or the ones with Tangent sights (other than to collect) they seem an insult to the Hi-Power beauty.

Then order one online for $399 and have it sent to a locall FFL for transfer. Definitely get the FN.

The SFS system has been discussed several times. It is essentially a way to operate a SA pistol without having the cocked and locked appearance. I have it on my FN and I like it. Some HP purists don't see the point, and they are technically correct; but there seems to be a market for it.

If the G23 is too snappy for you, then you probably won't like the HP in 40 either. poppy

I purchased an FN SFS Hi-Power (9mm) from CDNN a while back and think it was one of the best firearm expenditures I've ever made (and I've made a LOT!). I love it. Shoots like a dream. Great trigger, as accurate as my eyes can do justice, and recoil you hardly notice.

The main problem is - it's such a gorgeous pistol that I can't bring myself to carry it. :( It's like a work of art and the thought of marring that beautiful finish makes me cringe.

If you're looking for a regular carry piece, the FM might suit you better - unless you're not as fussy as I am - then I'd say FN all the way!
