I have the opportunity to buy a FN x-9 for $400 obo. I am not really in the market for a full size 9 right now, it's on the list, but behind a 12 gauge and .357 pack gun.

It seems like a really good deal, which is the only reason I am considering it. Anyone have experience with FN in general and this gun in particular? How are the ergonomics, closer to glock, walther, beretta? I can't stand glock ergonomics, love walther. It is in a different state, so I can't go hold it and see, and none of the local gun stores have anything FN in stock right now. Thoughts?

There was someone selling one locally for that price as well. I was very tempted, but I don't need another full size 9.

Great guns from all reports. Only complains from handling them is the SA trigger can be a little heavy compared to something like a Beretta. But in line with standard SA/DA.

Also, the grip texture can be rough, and mags expensive at times.

But, if you are in the market, it's hard to beat for that price.

Just don't leave it in the hot sun haha

FN is one of the best and largest gun makers in the world. Think Browning and Winchester, Browning 50cal heavy machine gun, Hi-Power and Auto5 among many others. They are located in Belgium so quality is not an issue and they have stood behind their products for the last 100+ years.
The FNX is an excellent handgun, I owned the the FNP, very similar, for several years and it was utterly reliable. I wish I still had it but someone wanted it more than me and i like the classic Sig guns a little better so i bought one of those instead.

Good to know. My local gun store/gun smith said they were good guns, it is always nice to hear a few more opinions though.

Always liked them, almost bought one a few times when they had first come out, but FNs trend at the time of coming out with a new model that didn't share mags kinda pushed me away.

If I had $400 in gun money laying around and a deal for a FNX for that price I'd be mighty tempted.

I have the .40 S&W version of the FNX and it is a dream to shoot on single action but double is long/heavy. If it looks like new and has the case, 3 mags and back straps, it is well worth $400.00 as I paid $425.00 for mine used.

If I could find the 9mm version for the same money/condition, it would be going home with me.

I wish I could hold one.

@BCR#1 How is the grip compared to a Glock? It looks like a similar angle and similar blocky shape. Glocks do not fit me.

Am gonna be the guy that says nope. I have a FNX 40 with a 9mm upper. FN is dropping models out of the FNS line, how long before they drop the FNX series?
FNX 9 mags are NOT the same as FNS 9mm mags, huge fail, but the bigger 40 mags are the same, plus they are 50 bucks per piece.
They are not user friendly in terms of taking them apart to replace parts, I'd do a CZ decocker model any day of week over a FNX.
The aftermarket for FNS and FNX guns just sucks.
They do not feel Glockish, more HK

You're not the only one.

I've shot one and handled 2-3 others. The grip is acceptable. The trigger is acceptable. WHat was unacceptable was the flex in the grip that always blocked the magazine from dropping out under its own (empty) weight. There was always friction there, and on every one I handled, I had to use my weak hand to physically pull the magazines out-loaded or empty. This was true of a broke-in gun and of new samples I handled at different stores.

I reallllllly like the DA/SA system in general, and I was looking at the FNX as a composite, lighter weight alternative to the Beretta 92FS. The Beretta is the better gun, albeit somewhat heavier. Mags are cheaper, too.

I have never held or shot a FN, HK or Beretta, so I can't compare.

Since I can't hold it before buying, I think I am going to pass. Thanks everyone for the input. I value real feedback like this much more than the gun reviews online, since most of those are paid reviews.

One thing I noted when I looked at the FNX a few times was the texture was quite aggressive on the grips.

I like aggressive grips and haven't found one that's TOO sharp to comfortably shoot with my hands, but I immediately thought it could be an issue for some folks.

I fired one once at a rental range. It felt CZ75ish, but I like the 75 better, and I wanted to like the FN as it was for sale at a good price. The one I fired had the curved "Browning" style grip panel installed. I love my FNS, but would probably pass on the FNX. For a DA/SA, save your dollars for a CZ75 or Sig 226. For an inexpensive carry gun, the FNS is superior in terms of maintenance, parts, holsters, etc.

I guess I got lucky, all three of my mags drop free when empty.

Or I got very unlucky lol. Seriously, though, with the mags out, the grips flexed inward when gripped tightly. Then again, I couldn't get the mags to drop with me not even holding the grip.

Got the FNX 45, its big. Very soft shooting for a 45. Grip flex/mag drop is not the issue. Its manipulation of the ambi mag release. Bottom it out and the other side catches. Depress it less than that it works great. Local PD here carries FNX9 or 45 in their "special purpose" dress. Normal uniform has a Glock.

I have an FNS-9. Agree on aftermarket availability issues, but have had none of the challenges other owners have reported. Mines a good shooter, solid built and reliable.

Fnx 9 is a good firearm , hammer fired polymer ,
Fn is kinda strange as they are not really mainstream in the civilian market but are a high quality gun maker
Not a lot of support for them in the aftermarket ,

I felt the same way about the grip texture; a little bit too aggressive for my hand as well.

I had an FNS-40 and it didn't stay too long. The main complaint I had about it was the grip texturing. It was, well, "Over the top" IMHO, and was unpleasant to hold and shoot compared to any and all of my other guns, and I had decided to get out of .40, so I sold it to a friend who likes it well enough. If you can, shoot before buying, or dry fire and see if you like the grip texture.
