The booklet included with my VX-II instructed me to focus the reticle after mounting. I'm supposed to point it at a light background (I'm using the sky) and rotate the eyepiece until it is claer.

Am I missing something, because to me, the reticle is always sharp no matter how much and in either direction I turn the eyepiece. I take the directions to mean the actual crosshairs might appear fuzzy (not the image), so that's what I'm looking at. I was worried my VX-II (my first scope) was defective or something, but I just mounted a Redfield with the AccuRange reticle and have the same issue. The crosshairs seem to appear sharp all the time.

I'm looking through the scopes with corrective eyeglasses, if that makes any difference. Hope this is not too stupid of a question.

I think where you are going astray is looking through the scope while screwing the eye piece in & out.

That won't work, because your eye tries to adjust to correct the out of focus reticule faster then you can screw the lens in & out.

What you need to do is make a change without looking through the scope.
Then pull the gun up and quickly look at the sky.

If the reticule is still fuzzy, adjust again without looking through the scope, then pull it up and look again.

That is the way you would use the gun in actual hunting conditions, as your eyes will be focused at longer range on the game, not at close range on the reticule when you pull the gun up.

I prefer to focus on a target or a sign with lettering of some sort and at a distance of 50 yards minimum.
Using a target like this you will clearly see when the focus is correct for your eyes.
